Wheel of Fortune Slots Celebrate Three Decades of Casino Fun

Wheel of Fortune slots are celebrating their 30th birthday this year. This year will be the 30th anniversary of the Wheel of Fortune slots. The beloved slot machine was a game-changer when it was first released and continues to change lives.

The game is considered the first licensed and branded slot machine in casinos. Over the years, there have been approximately 300 different versions of the game in casinos and online.

Before video slots were yelling Buffaloooooooo, there were rows of classic reel machines everywhere in Las Vegas, from the airport to the casino floors, chanting:

WHEEL…

OF…

FORTUNE!!!

Wheel of Fortune slots were by far the loudest in casinos and stood out from the pack by "talking" to passersby.

The game changed casinos forever. It also changed my life as a gambler.

How Wheel of Fortune Slots Changed Lives

Before visiting casinos, I was mostly a sports bettor and occasional poker player. That changed once I started playing on the casino floor.

I started as a table game player. Back then, slot machines carried a stigma of being games played almost exclusively by older women who took bus trips to Atlantic City.

Slots were not made for this super cool dude who just turned 21. I had a reputation to uphold with my East Coast friends and didn't consider playing slots until I visited Las Vegas.

Sure, the game was just chanting Wheel of Fortune randomly, but it felt like it was yelling at me in every Las Vegas casino I was visiting.

Wheel of Fortune was one of the first slot machines I remember playing because it triggered something different from all the others. The loud Wheel of Fortune chants were so obnoxious that they always caught my attention. So did the wheel atop the machine.

At first, I watched others spin the wheel. Then I realized I wanted to take part. Wheel of Fortune hooked me immediately with the loud noises, bright lights and fun bonus game.

I'm still not much of a slot player, but the games I'm attracted to the most go back to Wheel of Fortune 30 years ago. Sometimes I want a big wheel. Other times, I just want something loud and obnoxious.

Slot machines have come a long way in 30 years. While the original reel slots look basic by today’s standards, Jean Venneman, the chief studios officer at IGT, told the Las Vegas Sun that players didn’t know what to do when a wheel spin was triggered when it first reached casinos.

Even though there was a loud ding and a button with a flashing light for players to spin the wheel, there were no other slots with this feature, and early players didn’t know what to do.

Wheel of Fortune slots not only impacted the lives of gamblers, but it changed casino floors forever. Without this game, licensed brands like Wizard of OzMonopolyWilly Wonka, and countless other popular brands may never have been reimagined as slot machines.

It's also possible nobody would have created the loud and obnoxious slots on casino floors today without being inspired by Wheel of Fortune. Every slot machine should have a dope song, whether the win is a few dollars or a million.

Wheel of Fortune By the Numbers

Wheel of Fortune slots have impacted people differently. While it changed how I gamble, I never won big money from the game. I mostly wanted to spin the big wheel.

Beyond the gameplay, another reason the game is so popular is that people have won life-changing money. Over the past 30 years, 1,200 people have become millionaires playing Wheel of Fortune slots.

Before 2026 started, the game had paid $3.6 billion in jackpots. We can add at least $3.3 million to that total with a sweet jackpot won at Harry Reid International Airport last month.

California, Mississippi and Nevada have paid out more Wheel of Fortune jackpots than any other state. The largest single Wheel of Fortune slot jackpot wasn't in Las Vegas; rather, it was in Biloxi, Miss., for $14.4 million.

It seems as though there are new versions of the game in casinos nearly every month. After the original reel game, this massive flying saucer is one of my favorites among the 300 different Wheel of Fortune configurations.

There's no sign of new Wheel of Fortune games slowing down. There have been at least five new slots this year alone.

Sure, there are always new Wheel of Fortune slot machines. The brand is also expanding beyond slots. Over the past year, IGT has released the first Wheel of Fortune video poker game and Electronic Table Game (ETG) that includes the Big Wheel.
