Gambling by State
Every state's gambling scene in one place - click a state on the map or scroll the table below to jump straight to its full guide.
Gambling rules are set state by state, not federally. Sports betting is live in most states, real-money online casinos in only a handful, and other online casino games (sweepstakes-style or social/free-play) fill in almost everywhere else. Use the map to find exactly what's available where you are.

Federal law does not legalize or ban gambling itself - it sets the boundaries states operate inside. These four are the ones that shape every state page above.
1988
The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act created the framework for tribal casinos and the state-tribe compacts that govern them - the reason land-based tribal gaming exists in states where commercial casinos don't.
2006
The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act targets payment processing for illegal online bets, not the bettor - it's why offshore sites operate in a gray area rather than a clearly enforced ban.
2011
Justice Department opinions narrowed the 1961 Wire Act's scope mostly to sports betting, clearing the way for state lotteries and other games to sell online.
2018
The Supreme Court struck down the federal ban on state-authorized sports betting, handing the decision to each state - the single biggest driver of the last eight years of legalization.
Gambling law follows the state you're physically standing in, not your home state. A Texan visiting Las Vegas can play at a real casino floor; that same Texan logging into an online casino app from a Dallas hotel room still can't, because Texas hasn't legalized it. Before you place a bet on a trip, check the state you're headed to, not the one you left.
Two different guides per state: state + online casino gambling, or the land-based casino floors you can actually walk into. Use your browser's find-on-page (Ctrl/Cmd+F) to jump to a state.

It depends what you mean by "online gambling." Sports betting is live in most states, real-money online casino games in only a handful, and sweepstakes-style or social casino games operate almost everywhere else under a different legal model. Click your state above for the specifics.
Real-money online casinos take cash wagers directly and are only licensed in a small number of states. Sweepstakes casinos use a virtual currency model with a prize-redemption option, legal in many more states. Social casinos are play-money only with no cash value or prize redemption, which is why they're available almost everywhere.
Generally your location at the moment you play is what counts, not your home address, and most licensed apps use geolocation to confirm it. Check the destination state's guide before you travel.
No single federal law bans it outright. Federal law mostly regulates payment processing and interstate wagering, and leaves the core legal/illegal decision to each state.
