Michigan also offers:

  • Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS)
Paid fantasy contests where participants draft players and win based on their real-world performance are regulated and legal.
  • Lottery Games
The Michigan Lottery offers draw games (like Powerball, Mega Millions), instant scratch tickets, keno, and online lottery ticket purchases.
  • Pari-Mutuel Horse Racing
Betting on horse races at licensed tracks and through simulcast/off-track betting is legal. Unfortunately, the closure of Northville Downs in 2024 ended live horse racing in the state.
  • Charitable Gaming
Non-profits can hold licensed events like bingo, raffles, pull-tabs, and “millionaire parties” for fundraising.

How Michigan Gambling Compares to Nearby States

Michigan competes regionally with:

  • Wisconsin - Social casinos are legal but otherwise, online gimbling is a no go area. There are over two dozen land-based casinos all tribally operated.
  • Indiana - Indiana boasts 13 casinos including riverboats and racinos. Online sports betting is state regulated and available throughout but no online casinos or online poker yet.
  • Ohio - Just like Indiana, Ohio offers online sports betting but no casino games are allowed. For casino you have to head to one of 11 brick and mortar casinos.
  • Illinois - Illinois can't make its mind up about gambling. It introduced state regulated online sports betting and plays host to 16 casinos (two due to open in 2026), but it is levying such high gambling taxes they are driving players offshore. For online casinos you only get to play on social casino sites.

The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB)

Licensing and Approvals

The MGCB licenses both land-based and online casinos. Online casinos are all partnered with an existing commercial casino. An MGCB license is your guarantee that your money and personal details are protected and the games are fair.

Who Gets the Gaming Taxes?

Casino operators pay 8.4% sports betting receipts (8.1% state, 0.3% municipal). Detroit Commercial Casinos pay an additional 1.25% municipal service fee on top of state and city wagering taxes. iGaming taxes range from 20% to 28%. State revenue goes to the School Aid Fund while City of Detroit Revenue is used for police, neighborhood programs, and infrastructure.

Player Protection

Responsible gambling is at the heart of the MGCB’s mission. The regulator sets rules to prevent underage gambling. Both operators and the regulator offer extensive responsible gambling advice and support tools.

Michigan Lottery

Charitable gaming, bingo and the lottery are regulated by the Michigan Lottery itself. That includes online lottery.

Solving Problems

If you have a dispute with a casino you must try to fix it with the casino itself. If you can’t, then you can raise the problem directly with the MGCB. There is a dedicated page on the website and an online form to describe the issue.

Fair Games

Casino games, both on and offline all have to be independently verified for fairness. This is a big advantage of playing on Michigan regulated sites. You can always see the Return to Player % at online casinos. The MGCB makes sure that the games pay out what they should.
