Michigan Commercial Casinos Generate $98.2 Million in September, MGCB Renews Licenses

Detroit’s three commercial casinos generated $98.2 million in September, representing a 3% year-on-year decrease from the $101.2 million generated in September 2024.

Casinos also experienced a month-on-month loss, with profits decreasing by 7.1% from August, and revenue for table games and slots decreasing by 3% year-on-year.

As Detroit’s casinos experience a decline in September, the state’s gambling regulator, the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB), also renewed their licenses, allowing them to continue operating in the state until the following year. On the license renewal, MGCB Director Henry Williams described it as a benefit to Michigan communities, highlighting the casino's economic impact on Detroit as well as the state.

More community-focused news came in the form of a 25th anniversary celebration from Greektown Casino. Richard John Simmons, Chef of the casino's Prism restaurant, recently appeared on Fox2 Detroit to showcase the Royal Boil, available on Thursdays, and discuss the casino's latest promotions.

Additionally, the MotorCity Casino also recently announced new offers in collaboration with the Detroit Tigers, which include season tickets, premium seating, and exclusive amenities.

Greektown Casino Leads Change Despite Lowest Profits

According to the latest report from the Michigan Gaming Control Board, two of the three casinos in Detroit saw year-on-year losses.

The MGM Grand Detroit was the leader in revenue generated, with profits reaching $45.9 million, and accounted for 47% of the state's market share. However, this was a decrease from the $47.7 million generated in September 2024.

MotorCity Casino came in second place in terms of revenue raised, with profits totaling $28.9 million in September. However, it also saw the biggest losses year-on-year, declining by 7.2% from the $31.2 million generated in September 2024.

CasinoSeptember 2024 Revenue September 2025 Revenue Change
MGM Grand Detroit $47,678,733.21$45,865,558.57-3.8%
MotorCity Casino $31,165,223.39$28,931,410.56-7.2%

Total$101,229,066.62$98,181,263.16-3.0%

In contrast, while the Hollywood Casino at Greektown was the lowest earner in September, it was the only casino to see its revenue increase year-on-year, with profits up 4.5% from $22.4 million to $23.4 million.

Michigan Regulator Renews Detroit Casino Licenses

Detroit casinos can continue to provide for Michigan residents, as all three licenses have been renewed by the MGCB until September 2026.

"Detroit’s commercial casinos are not only entertainment destinations but also major contributors to the city and state economies. By renewing these licenses, the Board reaffirms its commitment to a gaming industry that promotes integrity, accountability, and community benefit," Williams said in a press release.

With taxes for the casinos adjusted gross receipts being 19%, and 10.9% of it going straight to the City of Detroit, casino revenue is helping to fund city services and economic development projects.

MotorCity Tiger Club and GreekTown Casino Reveal New Exclusive Offerings

Thanks to the MotorCity Casino Hotel, a new season membership will soon be available for Detroit Tigers fans. The offer, which includes premium indoor seating previously offered to the public on a game-by-game basis, will now be provided to season membership holders, with prices starting at $99 per seat, per game.

The new membership also includes exclusive amenities, including a private bar and restrooms, a menu of classic ballpark food, and signature cocktails.

Additionally, in celebration of its 25th anniversary, GreekTown Casino recently announced that it would give away $250,000 to guests throughout October and November.

Every Sunday and Friday, guests can win up to $10,000 by filling out their game boards and collecting tickets from corresponding kiosks. On Fridays, guests who are members of PENN Play or Hollywood Casino Apps receive bonus game pieces.

My love for gambling and casinos started early when my grandad handed me a video poker machine as a kid, sparking a lifelong fascination with the game. I grew up watching Celebrity Poker religiously and that turned into my organizing March Madness bracket tournaments all throughout elementary and high school—making every March a high-stakes competition among friends before I was even old enough to place a real bet.
