Golden Gate's New High-Limit Slot Room Debuts on 'Night Starts Here' Anniversary

LAS VEGAS — Golden Gate Casino is opening a newly expanded high-limit slots room on Friday. The date is significant as it's also the first anniversary of The Night Starts Here happy hour.

Plans for the new high-limit space have been in the works for months.

The existing high-limit room is still open to the main casino floor. Guests can access the new space through the old room as well as an opening near the door that looks out onto Circa and Plaza.

This part of the casino was most recently used as the risk room for Circa Sports before the casino opened across Fremont Street. While it's open to the main casino floor, there are almost 20 more slots and a couple of seating areas that are slightly tucked away from the action.

Last year, Golden Gate ditched all live dealer table games. The casino is entirely slot machines and electronic table games, surrounding the recently added Sigma Derby game, the only one in Las Vegas, which was moved from its old home at The D in June.

This Isn’t a Stuffy VIP-Only Slot Room

This isn’t a fancy high-limit gaming salon. It’s an elevated extension of the casino floor.

Like the rest of the casino, guests will hear loud dance music bumping through the speakers.

Even though there's room to relax, it will still have the high energy and fun atmosphere of the main casino floor.

Denominations of the machines start at five cents unlike the penny slots that occupy most of the main casino floor. Spins start around $4 for games like Mo Mummy.

During a preview of the new room, Derek Stevens, owner of the Golden Gate, told Casinos.com that this is "a room with high-end finishes that match the growth of 'The Night Starts Here.'"

He continued, saying that nightly happy hour with free slot play and drinks "has been a massive gold mine." Stevens shared some fun data from the first year:

There have been 65,000 unique participants with a total of 200,000 redemptions. The casino doled out $4 million in free play and 682,000 free drinks to all of those who visited during the nightly happy hour.

Instead of having TVs showing sports like some other high-limit rooms, the two big screens in the room are showing a slot leaderboard for the program. Stevens notes that players like the competition, and even guests sitting in the lounge chairs enjoying a drink with friends might decide to play.

Las Vegas Leading the Way in High Limit Slot Room Expansion

New high-limit slot rooms are all the rage in Las Vegas. Nearly 10 rooms were upgraded or opened in the past year. The Golden Gate expansion is the third in three weeks.

Fontainebleau debuted a new high-limit slot room last week, with content creator Vegas Matt on hand for the opening celebration. A week earlier, Plaza opened its new high-limit slot room a week earlier.

Stevens points out that Las Vegas has been at the forefront of an explosion in high-limit slot rooms, with some regional casinos investing in this trend.

Harrah's Resort Southern California unveiled a $13.1 million high-limit overhaul with the Rincon Band in May, Hard Rock Tulsa reimagined its high-limit room that same month, and Hard Rock Atlantic City expanded its own to 258 machines back in 2023, joining Borgata's 8,300-square-foot Miralto and Ocean Casino Resort's 7,450-square-foot Cove.

What Vegas has that those markets don't, at least so far, is volume and pace. Nowhere else is opening or expanding these rooms at the clip Las Vegas casinos have hit in the past year.

Las Vegas leading the way on casino spending trends is nothing new. The Vegas Strip was the first casino segment in the country where non-gaming revenue outpaced gambling.

We asked Stevens why there's been an explosion of high-limit slot rooms in Las Vegas. He noted that over the past 15 years or so, playing slots has shifted from being a solo endeavor to a group activity.

Table games were always considered the social games in casinos where players would interact with one another. Slots now have a similar appeal for many players while also being a game that can be played alone if that’s preferred.

The private spaces allow guests to relax with a drink while their friends play. If they choose, they can join in on the fun or just hang out. The spaces aren’t replacing nightclubs but they are a new lounge option for guests.

Between friends pooling their money, group trips, and bachelor or bachelorette trips, people are enjoying slots together. Group pulls have been popular on YouTube for years and are seemingly getting bigger by the day.

This appeal isn't just for tourists. Stevens says locals are playing this way as well. This helps explain why off-Strip casinos are upgrading their rooms at the same pace as the luxury properties on Las Vegas Blvd.

Whether they're locals and tourists seeking a quieter escape, groups of players gathering, or slot-content creators filming their next video, visitors are reshaping what high-limit slot rooms can be, and that evolution appears set to continue – starting in Las Vegas, with the rest of the country likely soon to follow.
