May makes for a fun month in Las Vegas. The first Saturday of the month is a surprisingly entertaining sports day, with playoff action, the Run for the Roses and boxing. The month ends with a long weekend and the unofficial start of summer.
The Kentucky Derby takes place on the first Saturday in May. Parties stretch from downtown Las Vegas to the South Point, where the upstairs ballroom fills with horse bettors. Before and after the race, NBA and NHL playoff games, MLB games and boxing round out the day.
That leads into Cinco de Mayo. Parties start on the weekend before the holiday, building to a peak on May 5. Anyone looking for a good time can head to the Fremont Street Experience, where free live entertainment runs all day.
Mid-month, EDM fans descend on Las Vegas for the annual Electric Daisy Carnival. The festival takes place at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, but fans can catch some of the most popular DJs at casino nightclubs before the main event.
As the month winds down, poker players arrive for six weeks of World Series of Poker events at Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas. The month culminates with Memorial Day weekend, May 23-26.
The comedy calendar is stacked with returning resident comedians and national tours. Some of the returning artists are performing in venues for the first time. The comedy tours this month range from solo acts to a multi-performer extravaganza.
Iliza Shlesinger is making her first appearance at The Venetian, while former performers make their second appearance at their new home, Caesars Palace. After her show, Iliza will be DJing an after-party at Juliet Cocktail Room.
Once again, Sebastian Maniscalco has four intimate shows in two nights at the 1,500-capacity Encore Theater inside Wynn Las Vegas. Las Vegas residencies are so popular because they often put attendees up close to performers who normally play large venues. Maniscalco typically plays 20,000-capacity arenas when he tours.
This has largely gone under the radar, but Westgate Las Vegas is just off the Strip and recently started booking comedians regularly. Comedy fans win when more large venues book stand-up comedy in Las Vegas.
There are a few small comedy clubs inside or adjacent to Las Vegas casinos. Tickets for these shows are among the most affordable in Las Vegas entertainment.
