Las Vegas casino chips aren't put out of commission often, but two instances of that are happening this month. The Cromwell and Plaza chips are being put out to pasture.
On the Strip, it’s out with the old Cromwell chips and in with the new Vanderpump Hotel chips later this month. The Plaza Hotel & Casino is also cashing in its modern classic series chips, along with its old logo.
Those looking to get older chips for their collections should hurry to either casino sooner rather than later. Anyone who wants cash for their old chips has a little more time.
Downtown, the Plaza Hotel & Casino is retiring the chips currently in circulation. Players should see a mix of new and old chips when visiting the downtown Las Vegas casino. Anyone who prefers to cash in their Plaza chips has until Aug. 30 to redeem them.
Multiple Plaza chips from different eras are being retired. Face values range from $1 to $1,000, so most gamblers who played there could be affected by the change.
Special-event chips, including those promoting the Big Blues Bender music festival and the "Mob Story" show, are being retired.
The chip swap won't impact guests playing in the high-limit room slated to open this summer, which will only feature slots and electronic table games rather than classic casino chips.
Head further downtown to the Strip and you’ll see that The Cromwell is already transitioning to become the Vanderpump Hotel. The changeover started with renovating the hotel rooms earlier this year. The modifications have moved to the casino floor, where the carpeting, lighting and table games have a new look. New gaming chips should follow soon.
A Caesars representative told Casinos.com that the chips at The Cromwell are scheduled to be swapped out for Vanderpump Hotel chips on Thursday, May 21. However, the date could change.
Chip collectors should focus on getting to the Vanderpump Hotel before they disappear just to be safe.
Unlike the Plaza situation, there's no deadline to redeem old chips from The Cromwell, since the changeover hasn't been 100% confirmed with the Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB).
Seeing a casino transition is a mixed bag for visitors. It's such a paradox to see both new and old decor at the same time. However, this leads to busy days feeling even more crowded since parts of the property are often blocked off.
What would the opening of Vanderpump Hotel be without a reality TV show? Of course, the transition is being documented.
During the 2026 Upfronts earlier this week, Bravo owner NBCUniversal shared details about a new show called Vanderpump Rules: Lisa Las Vegas:
“Now, Lisa Vanderpump is expanding her Vegas empire through the opening of her high-profile namesake hotel. In this limited series, we follow the behind-the-scenes dash to make the property worthy of the Vanderpump brand. LVP shares what inspired her newest enterprise and pulls back the curtain on the down-to-the-wire drama. The series will culminate at The Vanderpump Hotel’s lavish opening party, with fan-favorite Bravolebrities celebrating the launch.”
Specific dates haven’t been announced yet, but it will debut later this year.
Upfronts are when TV stations, streamers and media companies preview upcoming shows for advertisers. The Hollywood Reporter has an Upfront roundup for those looking forward to what else is coming.
