LAS VEGAS – The old adage “time is money” could not be truer when it comes to Super Bowl prop bet wagering at Las Vegas casino sportsbooks. The “Big Game” is the most popular event of the year when it comes to sports betting year after year.
The first Super Bowl LX props were released just minutes after the NFC Championship Game ended Sunday night. Bettors rushed to log in to their sportsbook apps or favorite casinos to try to get the best odds for the final matchup on Feb. 8.
Sme casino sportsbooks like BetMGM and Caesars Sportsbook rushed to get out as many props as possible after the Seattle Seahawks edged out the Los Angeles Rams. On the other hand, two of the most recognized Las Vegas land-based casinos have chosen to roll out their betting offerings much differently than the two largest casino chains in Nevada.
The Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook and Circa Sportsbook released the opening lines for the side and totals involving the Seahawks and New England Patriots right away. But the two sportsbooks waited to reveal their other offerings until later in the week, so their oddsmakers could study all the different options before putting out what they feel are their best numbers possible.
Circa Sports Director of Operations Jeff Benson said that their delay is intentional.
“We price a lot of things in-house, so it just takes longer to get things up,” Benson told Casinos.com. “We’ll have a lot of the same offerings as we had last year. Not sure how popular the [Seattle-New England] matchup will be.”
Regardless, thousands of local bettors and visitors attending one of the numerous Super Bowl parties in Vegas will literally have hundreds of different ways to bet on the Big Game.
One of Circa’s most popular offerings continues to be Circa Squares, which debuted in 2021 and was inspired by the traditional Super Bowl Squares party game.
Buying Super Bowl squares essentially involves staking a claim to the last digits for each team on a board, with the winners earning money based on the scores posted after each quarter and at the end of the game. For example, if you have the number 0 for the Seahawks and 7 for the Patriots, you would win money if Seattle were leading New England 10-7 at the end of the first quarter.
With Circa Squares, the sportsbook assigned odds to the possibilities so bettors could wager on them for either the first three quarters or the full game. The earlier-mentioned scenario, with the Seahawks at 0 and the Patriots at 7 at the end of the first quarter, currently has some of the lowest odds available at +700. The betting favorite right now is 0-0 for both teams at +425. Historically, 10 of the first 59 Super Bowls were scoreless at the end of the first quarter.
Circa was the first Vegas sportsbook to introduce squares to the betting market, and now you can find variations at just about every casino. Despite the fact that you can wager on all of Circa’s props via the sportsbook app, Benson said the squares are more popular for people going in person to the Super Bowl watch parties at The D, Golden Gate Hotel & Casino and Circa Resort & Casino. Benson also said that "5% of bettors will do a square” with most wagers coming in between $5 and $10.
At the SuperBook, many of the casino’s Super Bowl props were released on Wednesday evening, one night earlier than usual, to jump-start betting on the big game. About 400 game-play-related props were unveiled to the public in person at the sportsbook.
The release also features a unique Big Game Prop Contest, which began accepting entries on Friday, January 30. With an entry fee of $100, contestants must choose one side on 30 different Super Bowl props. The deadline to enter is Sunday, February 8, at 2 p.m.
“The Big Game is one of the most anticipated days of the year for our guests," said John Murray, Vice President of Race & Sports Operations, in a press release. "The SuperBook® continues to be the go-to destination for fans who want the best viewing and wagering experience in Las Vegas. Releasing our prop menu a day early gives bettors a head start, and with nearly 400 options to choose from, there’s truly something for everyone.”
Over the years, the SuperBook has been well-known for putting out a huge paper packet of Super Bowl props that bettors can study before walking up to the window or wagering on the app. Of course, the opening numbers can change quickly, which is why Murray said bettors are limited to two prop wagers on opening night with $2,000 limits.
Murray also credited both past and present oddsmakers for helping shape the SuperBook’s prop reputation.
“I think Jay [Kornegay], Ed [Salmons], and Jeff [Sherman] deserve a lot of credit for being part of making our Super Bowl props so popular,” Murray said about his current and former team members. “It’s a different world now with automated systems getting these props out. We are still going to provide a deep menu of props with fairer splits and good limits.”
As for the recently retired Kornegay, who previously made Super Bowl props extremely popular at the old Imperial Palace sportsbook before joining the SuperBook, he is enjoying well-earned time off during his post-sportsbook life. However, he still has a special place in his heart for the big game considering how much he helped shape the early props culture.
“One of the biggest things I miss is being with the guys, crunching the numbers and figuring out which props would receive the most attention,” Kornegay said. “To this day, customers have so many takes and are intrigued by how many [props] there are and how we come up with the lines. I give most of the credit to our team over the years.”
