Resorts World New York City will become the first gaming venue to offer live table games in the Big Apple once the casino opens its table gaming section on Tuesday, April 28.
The opening, contingent on final testing by the New York Gaming Commission, will feature over 240 table games at the Genting-owned casino next to Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens.
Resorts World NYC was one of three casino projects to earn a downstate casino license from regulators in New York, joining the Metropolitan Park proposal next to Citi Field and Bally’s Bronx. The opening ceremonies will feature Genting Chairman KT Lim, rapper Nas, and what the resort is calling a “who’s who of elected officials, community leaders, and entertainers.”
“New York City has never seen anything like what we’re planning for April 28,” Genting Americas East President Robert DeSalvio said in a statement. “Once the Gaming Commission’s final testing is complete, live table games will be open and operating right here in Queens for the first time in the history of New York City. We are ready to welcome New Yorkers to this exciting new experience.”
In the press release announcing the opening, Resorts World NYC also touted the number of jobs created as the facility moves toward full operation, with a workforce of 2,700 employees expected to be in place by this summer.
“Resorts World now employs over 2,200 Team Members and has already doubled our workforce and expect thousands more Team Members as the integrated resort is developed over the next three years,” DeSalvio said. “This is a transformational moment for Resorts World New York City, and we cannot wait to share it with our fellow New Yorkers.”
Resorts World NYC already existed as a racino, a racetrack-based casino offering electronic gaming, prior to earning its full casino license. That infrastructure was expected to give both Resorts World and MGM’s Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway a leg up in the battle for the three available licenses,
MGM ultimately dropped out of the bidding at the final hour due to concerns about the financial viability of a 15-year gaming license.
In contrast, both Bally’s Bronx and Metropolitan Park will need to be built from the ground up before opening. Bally’s is targeting a 2030 opening for its resort at the former Trump Golf Links, while New York Mets owner Steve Cohen and Hard Rock International have set June 30, 2030 as a target grand opening date for the Metropolitan Park resort, with other park amenities perhaps being available sooner.
