New York State has one of the most diverse and complex gambling landscapes in the United States, operating across three distinct categories: commercial casinos licensed by the New York State Gaming Commission, tribal casinos operated by sovereign Native American nations, and racinos combining traditional horse racing with modern gaming floors.
With three newly licensed commercial casinos also set to transform the market in the coming years, New York is one of the most dynamic gambling destinations in the country, with options to suit every type of visitor.

New York's casino landscape is unlike any other state in the US. With commercial casinos, tribal gaming resorts, and racinos all operating side by side, knowing what to expect before you arrive can make a real difference to your experience. Each category of property has its own distinct character, and part of the fun is discovering which suits you best.
New York's casinos fall into three broad categories. Commercial casinos are full-service resort properties licensed by the New York State Gaming Commission, offering the widest range of gaming options and amenities. Tribal casinos are operated by sovereign Native American nations and tend to offer some of the most impressive resort experiences in the state, particularly Turning Stone which rivals any casino resort in the country. Racinos combine traditional horse racing with modern gaming floors, ranging from the vast Resorts World New York City in Queens to smaller, more intimate venues upstate. Each offers a different experience, and many visitors find themselves drawn to all three.
Bring valid photo ID - casino operators across New York require guests to meet minimum age requirements to access gaming floors. On arrival at most properties you'll be invited to sign up for a player rewards card, which tracks your play and earns points redeemable for dining, hotel stays, and other benefits. It's free to join and worth doing even on your first visit.
Every casino property in New York offers slot machines, making them the natural starting point for first time visitors. They require no prior knowledge, are available at a wide range of stake levels, and are found in abundance across all three property categories. At the larger resorts like Turning Stone, Seneca Niagara, and Resorts World NYC the sheer variety and scale of the slot floors is impressive in its own right.
Table games including blackjack, roulette, and craps are available at commercial and tribal casino properties, with many offering beginner friendly tables with lower minimums where dealers are happy to explain the basics. It is worth noting that most racinos offer electronic table games rather than live dealer tables, so if live table gaming is important to you a commercial or tribal property will be the better choice. Several New York casinos also offer dedicated poker rooms, most notably Turning Stone with 32 tables, Resorts World Catskills, and del Lago Resort, where poker pits you against other players rather than the house for a distinctly different experience.
New York has embraced sports betting enthusiastically, and several casino properties have dedicated in-person sportsbook areas where you can place bets on a wide range of sporting events. The larger commercial and tribal resorts tend to offer the most developed sportsbook facilities.
If you're visiting a racino, live racing days are well worth experiencing even if you're not a seasoned racing fan. New York has a proud and storied racing heritage, and properties like Saratoga Casino Hotel, Batavia Downs, and MGM Empire City offer a genuine taste of that tradition alongside their modern gaming floors. Batavia Downs in particular carries the distinction of being the oldest lighted harness track in North America, dating back to 1940.
Not every venue in New York that carries the casino label offers the full Las Vegas-style experience you might expect. The Cayuga Nation operates a number of LakeSide Entertainment Class II gaming facilities across the state, and it's worth understanding what Class II gaming means before you visit.
Unlike the Class III commercial and tribal casinos featured elsewhere on this page, Class II gaming facilities offer bingo-based electronic gaming rather than traditional slot machines, live table games, or poker. The machines may look similar to slot machines on the surface, but they operate on a fundamentally different basis - think electronic bingo rather than the spinning reels you'd find at a full casino resort.
This doesn't make them any less legitimate as gaming venues, but if you're visiting New York specifically for a full casino resort experience with table games, poker rooms, and hotel amenities, a Class II facility may not meet your expectations. LakeSide Entertainment venues are located in the Finger Lakes region, with locations in Union Springs and Seneca Falls among others.
As always, we'd recommend checking directly with any venue before your visit to confirm exactly what gaming options are available.
| Class II Gaming | Vegas-Style (Class III) | |
|---|---|---|
| Machine Appearance | Similar to slot machines | Slot machines |
| How 'slots' Work | Electronic bingo based | Random number generator |
| Live Table Games | Not available | Blackjack, roulette, craps |
| Poker Rooms | Not available | Available at many properties |
| Sports Betting | Not available | Available at many properties |
| Resort Amenities | World class | Varies by property |
If you prefer a smoke free environment, Tioga Downs Casino Resort is worth noting as New York's only 100% smoke free casino property. Other properties may offer designated smoke free areas, but if this is a priority for your visit Tioga Downs is the standout choice.
New York's casino properties range from the boutique to the breathtaking when it comes to amenities beyond the gaming floor. At one end of the scale, Turning Stone Resort Casino offers five championship golf courses, multiple hotels, over 20 restaurants, and a world class spa. At the other, smaller racino properties offer more straightforward dining and entertainment options. Whatever your preference, every property on our list offers at least dining facilities, and several offer full resort experiences that could easily fill an entire weekend break.
Gambling should always be an enjoyable leisure activity. If you or someone you know is finding it difficult to stay in control, help is available.
The New York Council on Problem Gambling offers free, confidential support for anyone affected by problem gambling in the state. You can reach their helpline by calling 1-800-522-4700, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
New York's commercial casinos operate a voluntary self-exclusion program administered by the New York State Gaming Commission, which allows individuals to formally exclude themselves from licensed casino properties for a set period. Tribal casino properties operate their own self-exclusion programs independently. Visit the New York State Gaming Commission website or speak directly with your chosen venue for details on how to apply.
If you are concerned about your gambling habits, we encourage you to set a budget before you play, only gamble with money you can afford to lose, take regular breaks, and never chase your losses.
