New York state and in particular New York city is one of the most recognized places on the planet. Seen as the global center for American finance, culture and media the state has a population of around 20 million and attracts another 15 million tourists each year.

When it comes to gambling, New York state has a diverse casino landscape. At the time of writing, there are four state-licensed commercial casinos, multiple tribal casinos plus several racetracks that offer gaming too.

But that is soon about to change with the introduction of three new highly-sought-after commercial licenses downstate. Currently ten of the biggest casino companies in the world are vying for the three coveted spots, which will be determined in late 2025.

So with that in mind, let’s take a look at where and what you can play in New York State casinos right now.

New York Land-Based Casino Operators

There are a variety of casino licenses in play in New York state. The four commercial casinos and eight of the 16 tribal casinos can offer 24/7 Class III gaming which is Vegas-style slots, plus live table games.

The remaining tribal casinos are only able to offer Class II gaming which is electronic table games and electronic video games based on a bingo mechanism.  The racinos are able to offer video gaming machines based on a lottery mechanic and electronic table games and can stay open for a maximum of 20 hours a day.

The main casino operators in New York state are therefore quite mixed:

  • Resorts World – Operate one full service casino – Resorts World Catskills – and two others in New York state – Resorts World New York City and Resorts World Hudson Valley
  • MGM Resorts International – Operate Yonkers Raceway & Empire City Casino
  • Churchill Downs Inc – Operate commercial casino Del Lago Resort and Casino in Senaca County and Saratoga Casino and Raceway
  • Oneida Indian Nation of New York – Operate four Class III tribal casinos – Turning Stone Casino Resort, The Inn at Turning Stone, Yellow Brick Road Casino and Point Place Casino plus other smaller gaming operations
  • Seneca Nation of New York – Operate three Class III tribal casinos – Seneca Allegany Casino & Hotel, Senaca Buffalo Creek Casino and Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel plus other gaming facilities

New York Casino Resorts

The casino industry in New York state is in for a big shake-up over the next year or two but for now, here’s some info on three top casinos you can play in.

  • Resorts World Casino NYC – Although not able to offer live table games, Resorts World Casino NYC in Queens is just 12.5 miles from Times Square so is the closest casino to the epicenter of the Big Apple. Offering a two-story casino floor of 175,000 square feet, there are over 5,800 slot machines and electronic table games to choose from. The Hyatt Regency JFK Airport Hotel is on site with 400 guest rooms, a fitness center, multiple restaurants and bars with regular live music. This location is tipped to be one of the prime contenders for one of the new downstate licenses.
  • Empire City Casino – Another hot prospect for a full downstate license is Empire City Casino managed by MGM. Located around 18 miles from Times Square, the resort features live harness racing, four restaurants and bars with live entertainment, while the casino has 4,600 slots and electronic table games.
  • Turning Stone Casino Resort – Located in Verona, Turning Stone was the first legal casino to open in New York state and it has grown into a highly impressive mega-casino resort owned by the Oneida Indian Nation. Featuring over 700 rooms across four different hotels, the resort also offers two spas, three pools, five golf courses, tennis, racquetball, over 20 dining options, a 5,000-seat event center, and a 700-seat showroom. The 125,000-square-foot casino has 2,000 slots, 66 live table games, a huge Bingo hall, the largest poker room in New York State and a sportsbook.

More Than Gambling

It goes without saying that there are plenty of other things to do in New York state outside of the casinos, for example:

  • NYC Landmarks  – Times Square, Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty and Central Park are just a few of the iconic landmarks that you have to see when you’re in New York
  • Embrace Local culture – Flag down a yellow taxi cab, take the subway, watch a Broadway Show, eat a New York hot dog or pizza slice, take the Staten Island Ferry, walk Brooklyn Bridge or go skating at Rockefeller Center
  • Natural Beauty – Outside of the Big Apple there are some beautiful places to see such as Niagara Falls, Finger Lakes and Hudson River Valley
  • Sports and Music –. If you’re into sports then you are spoilt for choice. You can go see New York Yankees at the Yankee Stadium (MLB), The New York Giants at the MetLife Stadium (NFL), and The New York Knicks (NBA) and New York Rangers (NHL) at Madison Square Garden to name a few. Radio City Music Hall, Carnegie Hall and Madison Square Garden also host major music events.

Important Considerations

The legal age for gambling differs in New York state depending on the venue and the activity. In commercial casinos, the minimum age to gamble is 21 years old. However, in some tribal casinos and racinos, they do allow gambling from 18 years or over.

It’s advisable to check the minimum age before visiting the property and always bring photographic ID with you on entry.
