Pennsylvania Online Casinos Made $249M in September as One Player Won $4.3M

Pennsylvania's online casinos generated $249.3 million in September, up 6.82% year-over-year, according to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. Slots drove almost all of it, up 8.99% to $197.4 million, while table games slipped slightly and online poker stayed essentially flat. But the number that actually matters if you play in Pennsylvania happened a few weeks before the report even came out: the state's biggest online casino jackpot since iGaming launched there in 2019.

Hollywood Casino Paid Out $4.3 Million, and It Shows in the Numbers

On August 30, a Pennsylvania player spun Rome Fight for Gold: The Tiger's Rage on Hollywood Casino Online PA, paying $5.10 for the spin ($5 base bet plus a 10-cent opt-in into the site's four-way DropZone progressive pool), and walked away with $4,365,327. It's the largest confirmed win at a Pennsylvania online casino since the state's iGaming market opened in July 2019, more than double the previous state record of $2.3 million, hit on Cash Eruption at DraftKings Casino back in January 2024.

That win landed right in the middle of the month the state's revenue figures now cover, and Hollywood Casino at Penn National posted $99.0 million in September iGaming revenue, up 12.93% year-over-year and comfortably the largest total of any operator in the state. Second place, Valley Forge Casino Resort, brought in $69.8 million. Rivers Casino Philadelphia was third at $38.5 million.

It's worth being clear-eyed about what a win like this means for everyone else: a $4.3 million payout is a real jackpot for one player, not a sign the odds just got better for you. Progressive jackpots like DropZone pay out rarely by design; most spins on that 10-cent opt-in go toward building the next multi-million-dollar prize, not paying it out.

The Smaller Operators Growing the Fastest

Hollywood Casino and Valley Forge dominate on raw dollars, but three smaller brands posted the biggest percentage gains in the state. Bally's Pennsylvania grew 41.73% year-over-year to $5.4 million, Presque Isle Downs and Casino grew 34.82% to $4.7 million, and Harrah's Philadelphia grew 23.04% to $13.4 million. None of these come close to challenging the market leaders on volume, but they're the operators actually gaining ground rather than just holding share in an already-mature market.

One Operator Is Going the Other Way, and the Story Is More Complicated Than It Looks

Mohegan Pennsylvania's online casino revenue fell 64.55% year-over-year, the steepest drop of any licensed operator in the state. But the land-based business is fine, and the picture gets more interesting once you look at the month before.

Retail slot machines$14.44 million+5.35%
Total gaming revenue$18.76 million-13.93%

The decline is concentrated entirely in Mohegan's digital operations. Its physical slot floor actually grew. That rules out the simplest explanation, players abandoning the Mohegan brand altogether, since they clearly haven't stopped visiting the casino itself.

The bigger clue is what happened one month earlier. In August 2026, Mohegan's online casino revenue was up 71.4% year-over-year, climbing from roughly $1.75 million to $3.0 million, according to the Gaming Control Board's own operator breakdown. One month later, the annual comparison flipped hard into negative territory.

That's because September 2025 was an outsized month for Mohegan to begin with: $6.07 million, more than triple what it had done in August 2025. Measured against that spike, almost any September was going to look like a collapse. Measured month-to-month instead, September 2026's $2.15 million is a 28.4% drop from August's $3.0 million, a real decline, but nowhere near 64.55%.

None of that proves September 2025 was a fluke rather than September 2026 marking a genuine slowdown, and we don't have hold percentage or total wagering volume for either month to tell the two apart. What we do have points toward caution: Mohegan's parent company told investors its broader digital gaming business had just posted record quarterly Adjusted EBITDA for the three months to June 30, 2026, up 17.2% year-over-year, with management citing “continued momentum” in digital. A business posting record numbers that spring doesn't usually fall off a cliff three months later without some specific, identifiable cause, whether that's a particularly unlucky month for the house, a pullback in promotional spending, or something else entirely.

Mohegan's online casino is also small enough, under 1% of Pennsylvania's statewide iGaming market, that it's more exposed to this kind of swing than a FanDuel or a BetMGM would be. A single high-value player's cold or hot month, or a short pause in marketing spend, shows up far more clearly in a $2-6 million monthly number than it would at $70 million.

The honest answer is that this looks like a real decline sitting inside a genuinely volatile month, and the data available doesn't yet say which one is driving the headline number. We've asked Mohegan's press office whether the swing reflects player activity, promotional spending, or gaming outcomes, and we'll update this story if they respond.

The Rest of the Picture

Sports betting had a stronger September than the casino side, with statewide online and retail sports revenue up 50.45% year-over-year to $44.7 million, even as total handle wagered fell 6.09%. That gap, revenue climbing while total bets placed went down, means Pennsylvania sportsbooks kept a larger share of what was wagered this September than last, not that bettors wagered more overall.

Across every form of gaming the Board regulates, slots, tables, iGaming, sports betting, and fantasy contests, Pennsylvania generated $242.6 million in tax revenue in September alone, part of the $3.1 billion the state collected from gaming in the 2025-26 fiscal year.
