LAS VEGAS -- With the city known as the "Entertainment Capital of the World" for decades, Las Vegas has always made comedy part of the mix, from stage shows to magic.
Stand-up comedy, however, has been in and out of Las Vegas as its popularity has ebbed and flowed. The art form has been exploding across the country in recent years with larger arena shows with up to 20,000 in attendance.
In Las Vegas, there has been a revival in the popularity of stand-up comedy since the COVID-19 pandemic. It was one of the few forms of entertainment that could take place outdoors. At that time, Sebastian Menascalco’s residency at Wynn was under the stars instead of the spotlight inside the casino. His shows are now back indoors, and there are almost as many stand-up comedy residencies and limited engagements as musical acts in Las Vegas casinos.
Most of the stand-up comedy residencies in September feature longtime Las Vegas performers such as Jerry Seinfeld. In addition, several national tours are making stops in the city this month. Like the September concert calendar, comedians are also performing for visitors celebrating Mexican Independence Day. While the holiday falls on Sept. 16, there are shows scheduled before and after.
A handful of traditional small comedy clubs inside and around casinos will host performers daily throughout the month.
Jerry Seinfeld’s Caesars Palace residency started more than 20 years ago in 2003. That long-term engagement continues with two performances this month.
The Aces of Comedy series moved to MGM Grand when The Mirage closed last year. This month there are two shows with very familiar names at the property.
Las Vegas is a destination for residencies because fans can see performers play in more intimate venues than in their hometowns. While Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias will play arenas around the country, he performs regularly at the Chelsea inside The Cosmopolitan.
Most of the big national stand-up comedy tours in September are landing at The Venetian. The lineup has diversity, with rising stars Sam Morril and Trevor Wallace sharing the calendar with Jay and Silent Bob, who are dusting off their cult-classic movie characters for the stage.
Then there’s Doug Stanhope, who doesn’t exactly fit the polished vibe of the Strip. He’s bringing his unfiltered comedy to the Plaza in downtown Las Vegas, which feels like the perfect backdrop for his brand of chaos.
While the biggest names in stand-up comedy play theaters and larger venues in Las Vegas, many touring comedians stick to the clubs. There are a handful of comedy clubs inside or adjacent to casinos from one end of the Strip to the other.
Most of these clubs offer at least one show a night. Some schedule multiple shows daily depending on the day. Early performances may feature family-friendly comedians, while later shows tend to be edgier.
Ticket prices for these shows are among the most affordable in Las Vegas entertainment. The least expensive stand-up comedy tickets are at a club in the center of the Strip just outside The Linq casino.
