Palms is one of the few independently operated casinos in Las Vegas, owned by the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians. That ownership structure means the casino doesn’t have to conform to corporate goals like its Strip neighbors.
It has a unique tribal gaming culture among Las Vegas casinos and can move quickly to meet customer preferences, like when customers complain about smoking. Those prayers will be answered on Aug. 24 when Palms opens a new 24/7 non-smoking room.
“Guest feedback drives so much of what we do, and expanding our non-smoking gaming options is something we’ve heard consistently,” said Kevin Glass, general manager of Palms in a media release.
Unlike some casino floors with non-smoking areas that can leave guests sitting near smokers, this will be a fully enclosed room where guests cannot light up. It will also have a full-service bar with bartop gaming such as video poker and keno.
The new 7,300-square-foot non-smoking slot room is located in the space recently occupied by Mabel's BBQ, which closed last year. The room will be home to 224 of the casino's newest and most popular slots.
"Since Palms was recently recognized as one of the luckiest casinos in the country, we thought we'd make a little more room for the winning to continue," Glass said.
The bar itself might become a destination in its own right, with a rotating selection of draft beers from local breweries, including styles not available at other Palms bars. There will also be specialty cocktails available only in the non-smoking slot room, such as a nitro tequila-inspired carajillo.
Bourbon and scotch drinkers might have a new home, too. The bar will feature a Bartender's Choice selection of three premium bourbons and scotch flights for $10.
When Casinos.com spoke with Glass earlier this year, he said one of the things that separates Palms from other casinos is that it “focuses deeply on culture, service, and community impact.”
The new non-smoking slot space gives Palms a reason to do some good for the community. The casino will donate $25,000 to 10 charities, including the Heaven Can Wait Animal Society, S.A.F.E. House, and Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada...
On Tuesday, Sept. 1, beginning at 4 p.m., Palms will host the inaugural “Spin It Forward Celebrity Charity Slot Challenge,” presented by IGT. Each of the 10 charities will receive a $2,500 guaranteed donation from the San Manuel Gaming and Hospitality Authority.
Additionally, IGT will give each charity $1,000 in slot play, which they can accept or partner with a celebrity participant to play on the organization's behalf in hopes of increasing its contribution.
Las Vegas can be an enigma, since trends come and go quickly as customer preferences change. Sometimes traditions hang on longer than anyone would expect, like smoking inside casinos.
While the rate of smoking is at an all-time low around the country, it's alive and well in Las Vegas casinos, and it's noticeable. But there are still casinos with non-smoking areas around the city.
Park MGM is the only casino that doesn't allow smoking on the casino floor, in the hotel, or in any bars on the property.
Plaza in downtown Las Vegas is the only other casino with a smoke-free space off the main casino floor. The live-streaming non-smoking room has about 100 slot machines and a handful of table games.
Some casinos may have a non-smoking area on the main casino floor, but it is usually just a small area flanked by smokers.
One way to minimize the impact of smoke Las Vegas is to visit a newer casino. They often have newer, updated, or multiple air filtration systems to reduce how the smoke is moved or cleaned.
Aria and Circa have multiple systems that push the air up and away from guests. The newest casinos on the Vegas Strip, Fontainebleau and Resorts World both have high ceilings and multiple systems to clean and move the air.
