It’s Official: Metallica Will 'Ride the Lightning' to a Sphere Las Vegas Residency in 2026

After rampant rumors in 2025 fueled speculation of a 2026 residency, the rumors have proven true for one of the founding fathers of the 1980s thrash metal movement, Metallica.

The band announced on Feb. 25 that it will land at Sphere Las Vegas for the "Life Burns Faster" residency. The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers will play eight shows beginning in October 2026, and may play even more shows if the residency is a success.

Continuing the No Repeat Weekend Format

The Life Burns Faster schedule will mirror the structure Metallica used on its' recent M72 World Tour trek. The tour has used a “No Repeat Weekend” format, featuring two completely different shows on a given weekend. Each show has a different set list AND visual stimuli.

Metallica is bringing that same format and spirit to its shows this time, which are expected to pack the 17,000-seat arena with metal maniacs. It will add significantly to the more than four million fans who have seen the M72 World Tour since its inception in 2023.

This is something that has been on the mind of Metallica’s drummer and unofficial spokesperson, Lars Ulrich, for quite some time.

“About twelve seconds into opening night of Sphere with U2 back in 2023, I thought ‘We have to do this, it’s completely uncharted territory!’” Ulrich stated in a the announcement of the upcoming dates. “This residency gives us another chance to reinvent how we interact with our fans in a live setting. We are beyond excited to share this with the world in six months' time, and way psyched to go next level!”

Two-night and single-night tickets go on sale Friday, March 6, at 10 a.m. PT. Fan Club Presales start Monday, March 2, while the Ticketmaster Artist Presale opens Tuesday, March 3, along with additional partner presales.

For those who want an all-access option, the “Full House” Ticket (formerly known as the “I Disappear” Ticket) will grant fanatics entry to every Metallica show at the Sphere in 2026. VIP offerings will include Meet & Greet access, pre-show photo opportunities, exclusive entry into the Black Box Experience, early venue access, or a spot inside the Snake Pit.

The confirmed Sphere residency dates are:

  • October 1 and October 3
  • October 15 and October 17
  • October 22 and October 24
  • October 29 and October 31

Powerful Replacement for Other Legends

The arrival of Metallica at the Sphere in Las Vegas will be a powerful replacement for some of the legendary acts stepping off the Sphere stage in the coming year.

The Eagles will be wrapping up their long-term residency at Sphere, according to drummer Don Henley. He discussed the band's future in an interview with CBS Sunday Morning earlier in February. After 50 shows, Henley says that the Sphere dates will “probably be it” when they complete their last show in April. The Eagles' residency has generated more than $500 million in revenue since its launch in 2024.

Another long-term residency is in question as 2026’s concert season revs up. Dead & Company, featuring the music of The Grateful Dead at the Sphere in Las Vegas, has been in question since the passing of its major driving force. Guitarist Bob Weir, who passed away in January from complications of cancer and lung issues, was one of the last visible links to the legendary San Francisco band.

Although singer John Mayer worked closely with Weir on the shows, only one original band member remains in the band. With drummer Mickey Hart being the sole member, the continuation of any Dead & Company show is complicated. The Dead & Company residency has also been highly lucrative, generating over $500 million in revenues from their Sphere residency.

The arrival of a new force from San Francisco in Metallica presents several interesting tests for Sphere Las Vegas. The venue's state-of-the-art video and sound systems will be put to the test with the thunder of the Metallica attack.

Furthermore, the band is looking to again incorporate the “Snake Pit", which has been a staple of the M72 World Tour. It features fans inside the circular stage as the band plays around them.

It should be an exceptional live experience for members of the “Metal Militia” who have been dedicated to Metallica since their inception in 1980. On top of that, it will be a new challenge for Ulrich, vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield, lead guitarist Kirk Hammett, and bassist Robert Trujillo.
