Cyndi Lauper made her Las Vegas debut of her “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” residency last Friday at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. The Brooklyn native showed why she shouldn’t be underestimated, even in her seventies.
With love and enlightenment in The Colosseum, Cyndi was speaking directly to the audience between songs when a heckler called out for her to stop talking and continue singing. Her response was immediate.
"I don't know what the f--- he's saying," she told the audience. "Please remember where you are, okay?"
It didn’t stop there. She proceeded to say, “If you're trying to shade me, bitch, I'm going to come for you. I'm from Brooklyn, and if I want to f---ing talk, I will do a tap dance if I f---ing want."
The crowd wasted no time in supporting her with cheers and applause as she continued her talk.
Though Lauper has performed in Vegas from time to time throughout her career, this residency at Caesars Palace is the first one she has ever done. Her shows at The Colosseum are some of the biggest highlights for May's music calendar. It’s named after her “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” farewell tour, which ran from 2024 to 2025. That tour spanned four continents and included almost 70 shows.
Lauper has brought this chapter of her touring life to The Colosseum, putting her in the company of some of entertainment’s biggest names like Celine Dion and Adele.
At 72, Lauper is still one of the most recognizable voices in pop history. Her debut single, “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” became nothing short of an anthem upon its 1983 release and remains a hit to this day.
Cyndi also has long supported the LGBTQ+ community and founded the Girls Just Want to Have Fundamental Rights Fund in 2022, which works to advance basic rights and health of all women, girls, and LGBTQ+ people.”
Lauper’s exchange with the heckler is reminiscent of a situation rapper Cardi B experienced while performing at Drai’s Beach Club at The Cromwell in Las Vegas. In July 2023, Cardi B ended up throwing her microphone at a fan for throwing a drink at her.
Cardi was charged with assault and battery as a result of the incident, but was ultimately cleared of any criminal wrongdoing. However, she was hit with a civil lawsuit last year by the person struck by the microphone, which is still working its way through the courts.
The situations may differ between a verbal exchange and a physical exchange, but what’s clear is that Vegas performers are no strangers to disruptions during shows.
Lauper's next performances are this Friday and Saturday, May 1 and 2, at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. Showtime is 8 p.m.
