Trouble in the Tank: Golden Nugget Shark Aquarium Closes for Remainder of 2026 Pool Season

LAS VEGAS – Something fishy has been going on at The Tank pool at Golden Nugget. The shark aquarium, which sits right next to the outdoor pool, has been significantly drained and will remain closed until summer 2027.

Casinos.com visited the downtown Las Vegas property on Wednesday evening to check out the situation firsthand. The aquarium is nearly unrecognizable from how it normally looks, and all the sharks and fish are gone. What remains is only a small amount of water (that’s not even visible from afar) and a handful of smaller fish in certain viewing areas.

On-site pool security guards told us that the closure was due to damage that caused cracks in the tank.

How the Story Surfaced

The discussion picked up after YouTube content creator Searching 4 Grinds n Good Times posted a video of the property, showing the condition of the aquarium. In the clip, large sections of the tank appear empty, with no sharks in sight, and the waterslide tunnel that normally passes through the shark enclosure is dry.

The creator stated that employees at the pool said that the crack was caused by an earthquake in late April. But Golden Nugget's official explanation tells a slightly different story.

Cindy O'Keefe, Senior VP and Assistant General Manager of Golden Nugget, clarified exactly what led to the tank being drained:

“A routine inspection identified a slight gap in the structural seams, not a crack. The marine biology team was immediately on-site to ensure the safety of all animals. The remaining animals safely remain in the partially drained tank. Repairs to the seam are currently underway."

Golden Nugget did not address whether any of the damage was caused by an earthquake, as social media speculation implied. The resort did confirm to us that The Tank’s three tiger sharks have been temporarily moved over to Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay, while many of their larger fish are in a quarantine tank on site.

The Golden Nugget's official website also states that "the slide and aquarium will be closed for the remainder of the 2026 pool season," but all other pools, bars, and seating areas of The Tank and Hideout remain open.

Aquatic Oasis in the Downtown Desert

Though the Golden Nugget pool doesn't always get the same attention as its Strip counterparts, The Tank was one highlight of the property that had strong appeal for both kids and adults.

The appeal of The Tank is that you would be able to swim alongside an aquarium full of live sharks and exotic fish, and even ride a water slide that passes right through it. It's a step up in the interactive experience from the Shark Reef, where you could only walk through the enclosed aquarium rather than swim near the animals.

There’s nothing like this pool on the Strip or downtown, so the season-long closure is a real loss, especially as Vegas warms up quickly. But on the bright side, the sharks have a comfortable spot on the south end of the Strip until repairs are complete. Golden Nugget joins Luxor with pool area closures, which sits just next door to where their sharks are cared for.

It only makes sense that they would want to close the aquarium for the season to properly take care of business. It would be a true Sharknado nightmare for the casino if live sharks flooded the pool.
