TAMPA, Florida – There’s a great deal of energy in the world of slot influencers. Their connection with their fans goes far beyond a simple “follow” on social media. Because of this impact, casinos are learning how to maximize the connection between influencers and fans and tailor their offerings to the clientele.
This past weekend, the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Tampa served as the base for the “LadyLuckHQ and Friends: Birthday Triathlon Weekend.” The birthday celebration brought fans together with some of the biggest influencers in the gambling world.
More than 1,300 tickets sold out in under two weeks for Thursday’s kickoff event, and what unfolded was a serious celebration with some major cash prizes under the Hard Rock roof.
The excuse for the “Gathering of the Influencers” was to celebrate the birthday of one of the biggest names in slot influence, Francine "LadyLuckHQ" Maric.
Maric was joined by her partner, Miran "DudeLuck23" Maric, and a lineup of heavy hitters in the slot community. Some stars of the show included Scott “VegasMatt” Morrow, Scott “TheBigJackpot” Richter, Narek “NGSlot” Gharibyan, Lorraine “GoddessOfSlots” Bencivengo-Ziff, and Leana “MamaCipSlots” Cipriano.
The fun and games began Feb. 19, with a four-way “Spins for the Gold” tournament between LadyLuckHQ, TheBigJackpot, VegasMatt, and NGSlot. With the Winter Olympics ongoing, all four players were competing for the “gold medal.” The fans were not left out, either, as several activities around the Thursday night session brought influencers and fans together.
Before the action began, VegasMatt arrived via Seminole Hard Rock’s chartered jet and helicopter, setting the tone for the evening’s activities.
“They’ve [the Seminole Hard Rock Tampa] rolled out the red carpet for me, and it looks like this weekend is going to be non-stop fun,” Morrow said in the Green Room. He added that he was “looking for a million jackpot” during the weekend’s play.
TheBigJackpot, who hit one of the biggest slot jackpots in history, was looking forward to both the competition and meeting fans. But he wasted no time affirming that he was also “there to win another million!”
The competition took up four rounds of action. In the first round, the influencers had 30 spins, each with a $250 bet and increasing money per spin. The total winnings across the four rounds would be split 50/50 between the influencers and 15 fortunate fans. At the end of the night, there would be a Meet & Greet between the influencers and their fans, but first…it was time to hit the slots!
The influencers played until they ran out of spins. The four influencers rotated among the machines between rounds on stage to reduce variance. In the first round, TheBigJackpot lived up to his name, while NGSlot hit his own sizeable chunk of change. VegasMatt brought some thunder when he hit the largest jackpot of the evening at $52,000.
Though the birthday LadyLuckHQ couldn't get much going, she did receive a surprise gift from the property: a custom painting from noted Tampa artist Michael Vahl.
VegasMatt made the most of his trip to Florida by “Spinning for the Gold” and finishing in first place. NGSlot managed to take the silver, while TheBigJackpot had to settle for the bronze.
As the quartet of influencers took a step back to recuperate, four fans from the packed house were selected to come to the stage. They received 10 spins at $250 each and would walk away with anything they won. Win or lose, each of the four fans would receive a $500 credit from the casino, too. Each fan was fortunate, at least in the first round, to finish on the plus side and receive their credit.
But the night didn’t end there. The influencers then headed to a huge Meet & Greet with their fans before EVERYONE hit the casino floor for some action.
Day Two was when the influencers would mix it up with the Seminole Hard Rock guests in a $100,000 slots tournament. The first-place finisher would take down $40,000 in casino credit.
As with the night before, the myriad of slots influencers met and chatted with their fans at another Meet & Greet.
These types of activities are part of Seminole Hard Rock Tampa’s approach to engaging with its patrons. By utilizing the efforts of the slots influencers and their various social platforms, SHRT is turning online engagement into in-person energy. And it seems to be working with Thursday night’s sold-out festivities and packed casino throughout the weekend.
The event also helped present slots influencers as real people who share in the excitement of what happens inside a casino. Gone are the days when filming in the casino was verboten. Now it’s almost encouraged to film your sessions and share them online.
The slots influencers have done this at the apex level, but they also demonstrate their passion for gaming, which they share with their fans.
The $100,000 slots tournament was played on the SpinFerno TournXreme machines. Each player who registered for the tournament – with no buy-in required – had three minutes to do whatever they needed to build their score. At the end, the top scorer would be crowned the champion of the tournament.
A variety of players came to the machines. One gentleman walked away shaking his hands and arms, looking like he was having the time of his life. I asked him if he was a veteran of these events, and it turned out it was his first time.
When I asked him if he was going to do it again, he said, “Probably not…that’s a lot of work!”
Another player admitted that she frequently participates in these tournaments, but it wasn’t about the money for her. She, too, remarked on the wrist strain from the spin function and touchscreen on the PinFerno machines, but it did not seem to dim her excitement for the day.
“We’re here, we’re gambling, and we’re having a good time,” she said. “My wrists are beat up, but it’s all for fun…Now I am going to gamble for real!” she laughed as she walked away.
By the time Day Three rolled around on Feb. 21, there was no slowdown in sight, even during the daytime on the gaming floor. The finale of the Birthday Weekend brought the $300,000 Champion of the Reels to its end, and a $100,000 casino credit awaited the winner.
With that type of money on the line, the influencers were locked in to battling it out with their fans.
Fifteen flights played out in 10-minute intervals beginning at 2:30 p.m., filling 36 SpinFerno TournXreme machines inside the Event Center. Players had three minutes per round to rack up as many points as possible, and the champion was determined by the combined score from the two rounds.
Along with the usual suspects who had been around on Thursday and Friday, other slots influencers like Jon “JackpotJonny” Sullivan, Bobby “Bluff” Rivas, and Brandon “BluffinBrandino” Tanoue would come out for battle.
The influencers met many of their fans at another Meet & Greet. Even if someone wasn't playing in the tournament, there was still enough going on around the Event Center (like the open bar) that kept them having fun.
Even more notably, nobody was in a bad mood – not the players, the influencers, or the Hard Rock staff. Everyone was happy and having an enjoyable time.
Outside of Las Vegas, casinos feel like a more casual place to have a fun night out and win some money. In Las Vegas, the energy is different and on a much larger scale. The stakes are higher, the crowds are bigger, and the pace is faster than the laid-back fun regional casinos may offer.
Once their Meet & Greet duties were complete, the influencers continued to talk up their fans, showing a level of camaraderie with their followers rarely seen. On the final day, TheBigJackpot and VegasMatt were still schmoozing around the room with fans and attendees. He even had to be dragged away to his chartered jet to head back to the desert.
I had the opportunity to speak with MamaCip after she completed her second round. She explained how she carved out her niche in the slot influencer space by focusing on winning in lower-stakes play, like what her followers were likely to be playing.
“People like seeing something that might be a bit more realistic,” MamaCip said. She proved that by staying in the Top Ten of the $300K tournament for most of the event.
For a three-day weekend that featured competition between a diverse group of people, there were minimal problems with the machines, thanks to the slot maintenance staff.
As the influencers handed out their last hugs and high fives, the Event Center was packed up. Anyone who was part of the three-day slots jamboree walked away with great memories in celebrating LadyLuckHQ’s birthday. Yet again, Seminole Hard Rock Tampa notched another excellent influencer-based event for its portfolio.
