Tino Magnata never set out to become a leading voice in the gaming industry. But after more than 7,000 interviews, the Canadian-born filmmaker has emerged as a key connector across tribal gaming, resort tourism, and leadership development.
Through his YouTube series "Casino Update", Magnata has chronicled the transformation of an industry under pressure, especially during the pandemic, when casino destinations faced closures, uncertainty, and disruption. His platform became a vital forum for tribal leaders, general managers, and executives to share their approaches to reopening, rebuilding, and redefining casino culture.
The first episode aired during the height of COVID-19 lockdowns, featuring General Manager Conrad Granito. That interview quickly became a touchstone for the sector.
Magnata said the response made one thing clear: "People got to see what others were doing, what they were thinking."
The series gave isolated professionals a way to stay informed and connected.
Before launching "Casino Update", Magnata worked in the film industry for nearly 20 years. With a degree in motion picture production, he specialised in visual storytelling.
That creative training served him well when COVID-19 halted the gaming industry. As casinos closed and thousands were furloughed, Magnata saw a gap in communication. He launched his show on social media, and one early success came from filming the first U.S. casino reopening during the pandemic, at Coeur d’Alene Casino in Idaho.
The episode struck a chord. Operators nationwide used the footage as a guide for their own reopening strategies. “People watched that video and got inspired to open their casinos,” Magnata said.
What sets "Casino Update" apart is its conversational tone. Magnata describes his approach as casual but sincere, “like you’re sitting at a bar having a pint.” That style encourages guests to open up without the pressure of a traditional interview setting.
“There’s no pretense,” he said. “We’re not here to blow up our egos. We’re just here to share information and make our great business greater.”
His guest list reads like a who's who of the industry: chief executives, tribal chairpersons, and long-serving general managers. Across these conversations, one theme emerges consistently, community comes first.
A significant portion of "Casino Update" focuses on Native American casinos. Magnata’s work documents the wider impact of tribal gaming: from infrastructure and healthcare to cultural preservation and education.

Nearly 95% of net profits from tribal casinos are reinvested in local communities, according to the National Indian Gaming Commission. Magnata’s videos don’t just feature slots and high-limit rooms; they showcase wellness centres, cultural festivals, golf courses, and spa retreats.
“These are people that care about nature, their people, and their future,” he said. “It’s a very compelling business model.”
As the gaming landscape shifts, "Casino Update" continues to track industry developments, from online casino and skill-based machines to regulatory issues and responsible gaming.
“There’s been a proliferation of gaming like we’ve never seen before,” Magnata said. “Online betting, skill games, sweepstakes, everything’s exploding.”
Despite the pace of change, his message remains consistent: casinos are evolving into full-scale entertainment hubs. Patrons come for much more than gambling, they seek shows, cuisine, relaxation, and experiences.
Born in Canada to Italian immigrant parents, Magnata studied in Italy before settling in California. His upbringing instilled in him a strong sense of family and purpose.
He speaks often about the importance of staying grounded. "Every day I wake up, I have a purpose," he said. "That purpose is rooted in family, and in making sure I carry those values into everything I do."
To those starting out in the casino world, Magnata offers clear guidance: stay humble, ask questions, and value mentorship.
“Be willing to do things that seem beneath you. Get into the weeds. Learn from mentors,” he said.
"Casino Update" has become more than a video series. It serves as a time capsule of an evolving industry, a place where today’s leaders document their challenges, triumphs, and long-term visions.
Most of my career was spent in teaching including at one of the UK’s top private schools. I left London in 2000 and set up home in Wales raising four beautiful children. I enrolled at University where I studied Photography and film and gained a Degree and subsequently a Masters Degree. In 2014 I helped launch a new local newspaper and managed to get front and back page as well as 6 filler pages on a weekly basis. I saw that journalism was changing and was a pioneer of hyperlocal news in Wales. In 2017 I started one of the first 24/7 free independent news sites for Wales. Having taken that to a successful business model I was keen for a new challenge. Joining the company is exciting for me especially as it is a new role in Europe. I am keen to establish myself and help others to do the same.
