As Nebraska casinos record yet another positive month, the Cornhusker State is ensuring the well-being of children statewide by using casino gambling winnings to fund state agencies. Since September of this year, nearly 40% of gambling winnings obtained by casinos have been put towards supporting overdue child support.

A new program, named the Gambling Winnings Setoff For Outstanding Debt Act, has been created to help the state pay off any outstanding debt a resident may have by requiring casinos to hold back a portion of any gambling winnings and send them to the Department of Revenue.
Via the department, money will then be used to help fund various state agencies, including the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Motor Vehicles.
The act took effect at the beginning of September, following its signing into law by Governor Jim Pillen in 2024. Casinos are able to withhold gambling winnings from any casino games, sports betting, horse racing, and rewards from amusement devices.
Over $200,000 of the amount collected went towards the Child Support Enforcement Program, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. In a statement, Governor Pillen said that the program ensures support for Nebraska kids, with gambling winnings “guaranteeing their well-being.”
“By administering these dollars directly to families, the Child Support Enforcement Program is setting our state’s children up for success,” added Shannon Grotrian, director of the Office of Economic Assistance. “It’s making an immediate impact on their livelihoods and making sure they have what they need to grow and thrive.”

I grew up watching Celebrity Poker religiously and that turned into my organizing March Madness bracket tournaments all throughout elementary and high school—making every March a high-stakes competition among friends before I was even old enough to place a real bet.
