More Americans are visiting casinos and participating in gambling than ever before, according to the American Gaming Association's (AGA) latest consumer survey released on October 30.

According to the data, 53% of American adults – 134 million in total – visited a casino in the past 12 months, either to gamble or for another entertainment purpose. That’s the highest level of casino visitation the organization has on record.

Majority of Americans Have Gambled Over the Past Year

Over, 57% of American adults participated in some form of gambling over the past year. About 30% gambled at physical casinos and 21% placed at least one sports bet.

In addition, the study found broad support for legalized gambling in the United States. According to the survey, 77% of Americans said that the gaming industry has a positive impact on the U.S economy, while 74% said they favor legal sports betting in their state.

“These results underscore a sustainable foundation for the American gaming industry, reflecting strong consumer confidence in a state-regulated market as a safe and trusted form of entertainment,” AGA President and CEO Bill Miller said in a statement.

AGA Sees Progress on Responsible Gambling, Recognition of Legal Platforms

The AGA also used the survey to test the reach of responsible gambling messaging to the public. More Americans reported being aware of responsible gaming messages over the past year, with 72% of respondents saying they’ve encountered such messaging compared to 56% in 2022. Meanwhile, 64% of Americans said that the gaming industry has made a commitment to encouraging responsible gaming and fighting problem gambling, up from 40% in a 2018 survey.

In addition, the AGA touted its efforts to push Americans towards legalized and regulated gambling sites. According to the survey, 90% of iGaming customers and 93% of sports bettors say that the legality of a gambling platform is important when deciding where to play. However, the AGA also noted that more than 40% of gamblers reported having trouble identifying which sites were truly legal.

“We will continue to build on this momentum by expanding the legal market, strengthening responsibility, and ensuring gaming delivers for players and communities alike,” Miller said in a statement.

The survey, which was conducted by Kantar from July 22 through August 8, was conducted online. A nationally representative survey of 2,001 registered voters ages 21 and older participated in the poll.
