The Garfield Movie's May 2024 release means it has hit cinemas nearly 20 years to the day since Murray lent his voice to the titular role in Garfield: The Movie.

Following the latest film's recent panning, it looks unlikely there will be a sequel on the way, and it is just 4/6 that The Garfield Movie doesn't return for a second version.

However, it is 6/4 to spawn a sequel, and it is worth noting that Murray's initial Garfield portrayal only has a 14 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating, and he was back in the voiceover booth two years later, acting out lasagne-munching sounds.

Despite this, Murray previously claimed he only starred in the first movie because he thought it was written by one of the Coen brothers, but it was actually penned by Cheaper By The Dozen scribe Joel Cohen, who has an "h" in his surname.

When speaking about Garfield: The Movie in 2010, Murray told GQ Magazine: "No! I didn't make that for the dough! Well, not completely.

"I thought it would be kind of fun, because doing a voice is challenging, and I'd never done that. Plus, I looked at the script, and it said, 'So-and-so and Joel Coen.' And I thought, 'Christ, well, I love those Coens! They're funny' - said Murray.

"I sat down and watched the whole thing, and I kept saying, 'Who the hell cut this thing? Who did this? What the f*** was Coen thinking?' And then they explained it to me: It wasn't written by that Joel Coen."

Despite this, Murray returned for a sequel, and he has since admitted that Jennifer Love Hewitt, who played Garfield's vet and his owner Jon's love interest, Dr. Liz Wilson, in both movies, was one of the only positives about the motion picture.

Hopefully, Pratt, Jackson, Waddingham and co don't have regrets either.
