Casino gross gaming revenue in Massachusetts reached $105.4 million in May, up from last year’s total of $98 million, a 7.5% year-on-year increase.
The figures, published by the state’s gaming regulator, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC), revealed that slots accounted for $75.5 million of the combined GGR, rising from May 2024’s total of $68.7 million, a year-on-year increase of 9.9%. In comparison, table games generated $29.8 million in GGR, increasing from $29.3 million, a yearly rise of 2%.
| Casino | Revenue May 2024 | Revenue May 2025 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Encore Boston Harbor | $61,175,512 | $63,303,643 | 3.5% |
| MGM Springfield | $22,422,694 | $25,431,179 | 13.4% |
| Plainridge Park Casino | $14,390,837 | $16,628,651 | 15.6% |
| Total | $97,989,043 | $105,363,473 | 7.5% |
All three of the state's regulated venues saw revenue rises, but two were particularly impressive.
Plainride Park Casino had the most significant revenue increase of all three casinos, despite only recording slot revenue. GGR rose from $14.4 million to $16.6 million, a yearly increase of 15.6%. This was followed by MGM Springfield, which reported GGR of $25.4 million, a year-on-year increase of 13.4%.
Encore Boston Harbor recorded the smallest increase, with revenue rising by 3.5% from last May. However, Encore Boston Harbor remains the most significant contributor to the industry revenue total, with $63.3 million in May 2025. This figure comprises $38.2 million in slot GGR and $25.1 million in table games GGR.
Meanwhile, a significant change could be coming in the Bay State. Currently, online casino gaming is not legal in Massachusetts, but this week, lawmakers will consider two pieces of legislation that could introduce online casino games to the state.
The Joint Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure will consider House Bill 332 and Senate Bill 235. If the bills are passed, the MGC would have the power to license and regulate online casino operators.
The bills provide for each of the three existing casinos in the state to partner with up to two online brands, while regulators could also approve four independent operators. Licenses would cost $5 million for five years, with a 20% tax on operator revenue.
The debate in Massachusetts mirrors broader national trends. While states like Illinois, Maryland, and Indiana have all considered online casino legislation this year, few proposals advanced through state legislatures. The MGC has voiced concerns about the growth of online gambling, advocating for a nationwide framework of gambling advertising regulations.
On the other hand, organisations such as the Sports Betting Alliance insist that a regulated market would improve the current unregulated online casino sector.
While sports betting is now legal in 39 US states, online casino gaming is only available in seven: Connecticut, Delaware, Nevada, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Michigan.

My love for gambling and casinos started early when my grandad handed me a video poker machine as a kid, sparking a lifelong fascination with the game. I grew up watching Celebrity Poker religiously and that turned into my organizing March Madness bracket tournaments all throughout elementary and high school—making every March a high-stakes competition among friends before I was even old enough to place a real bet.
