Maryland Casinos Record $162.6 Million in April Revenue

The six land-based casinos in Maryland generated $162.6 million in revenue during April 2025, according to a report from Maryland Lottery and Gaming. That was a slight decline of 0.3% or $0.5 million on the April 2024 figure. It also dropped by 5.5% from March 2025.

The figures also show that the land-based casino sector’s contributions to state coffers increased year-on-year in April.

The total contributions reached $70.6 million, representing an increase of $0.8 million or 1.1% from last year. Around $50.9 million will go to the Maryland Education Trust Fund, which funds educational projects across the state. The Education Trust Fund contribution is also up 1% year-on-year.

Mixed Casino Revenue Results Across Maryland in April

Although overall revenue was slightly down in April, the revenue picture across the state’s six privately owned venues was mixed.

MGM National Harbor, in Prince George’s County, was once again the revenue leader, generating $68.2 million, though this was up only 0.8% from the April 2024 figure. The Horseshoe Casino Baltimore showed the most significant gain, a 6.2% rise in revenue year-on-year to $15.6 million. The other casino to post year-on-year revenue growth was Oceans Downs Casino, where revenues increased by nearly 3%.

Results were less impressive at Live! Casino & Hotel in Anne Arundel County showed a revenue drop of 3.2% year-on-year to $58.9 million. Significantly, this accounted for $1.9 million less in revenue for the state and covered most of the difference between April 2024 and April 2025.

Rocky Gap Casino in Allegany County saw a drop in revenue of 4.1% from last April. Meanwhile, Hollywood Casino revenues slide by just 0.6% year-on-year, a change of less than $55,000.

Sweepstakes Ban Blocked in Maryland Amid Casino Results

Meanwhile, an attempt to ban online sweepstakes in Maryland failed after the 2025 Maryland legislative session ended on April 7.

Senator Paul Corderman proposed SB 860, which would have banned online contests that use a dual-currency system of payment to permit casino, lottery, or sports betting-style gaming. The bill would also criminalize sweepstakes operators' suppliers and business partners.

However, although it was approved unanimously in the Senate last month, it has since been sitting with the House Ways and Means Committee without being voted on.

The end of the legislative session also means that a parallel effort to legalize online casino gaming has failed. HB 17, introduced in January, would have legalized online slots, casino games, and poker for Maryland residents over 21 but met strong resistance in the Senate.
