Kansas Casino June Revenues Drop 5% YoY While Gambling Crime Boss Dies

The Kansas Lottery has published its monthly report for June. It shows that the four casinos in Kansas combined for a total of $34.2 million in revenue during the month. That compares to $36.1 million in revenue last June, representing a year-on-year decline of 5.28%.

All four casinos in the state showed declining revenue, with Boot Hill Casino reporting the biggest percentage loss: $3.5 million in June, a significant 13.46% drop from the $4.1 million recorded for June last year.

The most significant absolute loss was at Hollywood Casino. The venue, which contributed a little over 40% of the sector’s combined revenue in June, reported a year-on-year decline of 4.88% or $199,699.

While Kansas Casino Revenue Falls, Casinos Continue Expansion

The revenue decline has not slowed the pace of growth in the Kansas casino sector. Two new hotel developments could transform the Missouri and Kansas casino regions.

In Kansas City, the True North Hotel Group has won permission to build a five-story casino hotel next to Bally’s Kansas City Casino. The 123-room building will include 163 parking spaces, an outdoor gathering space, and a temporary path to the riverfront, which will be made permanent in the future.

Developers expect to break ground on the project later this year, with the opening date set for 2027. The project will also be boosted by a 25-year Port Improvement District, which will add a 1% sales tax to fund hotel construction and other riverfront enhancements.

Meanwhile, Crosswinds Casino has broken ground in Park City on an expansion project that will produce a 15-storey hotel with 238 rooms and suites, a pool, an outdoor bar, and a ballroom. It will also offer space for 1,400 slot machines, a high-limit room, shops, and restaurants.

Kansas City Gambling Crime Boss Dies

Meanwhile, a well-known Kansas City mob boss, Peter ‘Las Vegas Pete’ Simone, died at 79, two days before his 80th birthday. The long-time underboss of the Kansas City mafia reportedly served under Nick and Carl Civella as the number two man in the crime family for over 30 years.

He was in charge of gambling operations in Las Vegas and was never convicted of violent crime, although he was linked to a 1990 murder by federal investigators. He served two prison sentences, the first for gambling and money laundering, and the second for parole violations. He remained a well-known local figure until his death and was blacklisted at casinos in Missouri, Nevada, and New Jersey.
