Kansas has ten casinos in total, four commercial properties and six tribal casinos, but the commercial side operates in a way you will not find anywhere else in the United States.
When Kansas legalised casino gambling through the Kansas Expanded Lottery Act in 2007, it faced a constitutional hurdle. The Kansas constitution only permits state-run lottery facilities, so a conventional commercial casino model was not an option. The solution was a hybrid arrangement: the state holds the gaming licences and owns the equipment on the floor, while private operators are contracted to manage and run each property day to day. The Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission oversees the whole operation.
In practice, visiting one of the four commercial casinos feels no different from visiting a privately run property elsewhere. Each sits within one of four designated gaming zones, with one commercial property permitted per zone. The six tribal casinos operate separately under federally approved gaming compacts and are not subject to the same lottery framework.
Kansas's four commercial casinos are each managed by a major private operator under contract with the state. All four offer slots, table games, and retail sportsbooks, with online betting available statewide through their affiliated apps.

Tribal Casinos
Kansas's six tribal casinos operate under federally approved gaming compacts between the state and individual tribes, independently of the state lottery framework that governs the commercial properties. The offering varies considerably across the six properties, from full resort experiences to smaller slot-focused venues.

Kansas legalised both retail and online sports betting in May 2022 when Governor Laura Kelly signed Senate Bill 84 into law. The first legal wagers were placed on September 1, 2022, making Kansas one of the earlier states to launch a fully operational market with both in-person and mobile options available from day one.
Each of the four state-licensed commercial casinos can partner with up to three online sportsbook operators, allowing major national brands to offer betting both at retail locations inside the casinos and through their apps statewide. Six operators are currently licensed: FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars, Fanatics, and theScore Bet. Bet365 launched independently in August 2025. On the tribal side, Prairie Band Casino opened the first tribal sportsbook in January 2024, with compacts for Sac and Fox Casino and Casino White Cloud approved in 2023 and 2024 respectively.
Betting is available on professional and college sports, but Kansas bettors cannot wager on in-state college teams including the Kansas Jayhawks, Kansas State Wildcats, or Wichita State Shockers. College player props are also prohibited statewide regardless of which team is involved. The Kansas City Chiefs and Royals are both popular betting options despite being technically based across the border in Missouri.
In April 2025 the Kansas legislature passed a budget provision preventing the Kansas Lottery from negotiating any new or renewed sportsbook contracts until July 2026. All current licences are due to expire in August 2027. The existing operators remain fully active in the meantime, but the long-term regulatory model is under active review, with a single operator monopoly among the options being discussed. It is a developing situation worth monitoring.
Kansas is a big state and the casinos are spread across it, so a little planning goes a long way. Here are a few things worth knowing before you go.
The four commercial casinos each serve a distinct region. Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway is the go-to for Kansas City visitors, Kansas Star is the Wichita option, Kansas Crossing serves southeast Kansas, and Boot Hill is a destination in its own right given its Dodge City setting. If you are travelling specifically to gamble rather than combining it with a trip, it is worth picking the property closest to you rather than assuming one is significantly better than another.
Despite being the largest city in Kansas, Wichita has no casino within its limits. Kansas Star Casino in Mulvane is the closest option at around 17 miles south of the city centre, and is straightforward to reach from the interstate.
Boot Hill Casino sits in one of the most historically rich towns in the American West. The Boot Hill Museum, Front Street gunfight re-enactments, and the original Boot Hill cemetery are all within easy reach of the casino, making Dodge City a genuinely worthwhile overnight destination rather than just a casino stop.
The minimum gambling age at all Kansas casinos is 21. Photo ID will be required on entry so make sure you have it with you.
If you want a hotel, golf, dining, and a full resort experience under one roof, Prairie Band Casino and Resort near Topeka is the strongest all-round option among the tribal properties. The Firekeeper Golf Course alone makes it worth considering as a dedicated weekend trip.
Gambling should always be an enjoyable experience. If you or someone you know is struggling to stay in control, free and confidential support is available in Kansas.
The Kansas Coalition on Problem Gambling operates a dedicated helpline at 1-800-522-4700, available around the clock. Further information and resources can be found at ksgamblinghelp.com. The national 1-800-GAMBLER helpline is also available 24 hours a day. Self-exclusion is managed through individual casino properties and, for online sports betting, through the Kansas Lottery.

Read Full BioKansas has four state-owned commercial casinos — Boot Hill Casino and Resort in Dodge City, Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas Star Casino in Mulvane, and Kansas Crossing Casino in Pittsburg. A number of tribal casinos also operate in the state under federal gaming compacts. Kansas has a unique model in which the state owns the casino facilities and private management companies operate them under contract.
Kansas Star Casino in Mulvane, managed by Boyd Gaming, is Kansas's largest commercial casino property, with an extensive gaming floor, a hotel, an arena entertainment venue and multiple dining options. Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City is the most prominently located property, situated adjacent to the NASCAR racing circuit.
Kansas casinos offer slot machines, live table games including blackjack, roulette, craps and poker, and electronic gaming. Sports betting is legal at retail sportsbooks inside the four state casinos and through licensed mobile apps statewide. Online casino gaming is not legal in Kansas, and no legislation to authorize it has been proposed in recent sessions.
Kansas has no traditional racinos — all licensed horse racing tracks in the state ceased operations in 2008. Sports betting launched in September 2022 following the signing of Senate Bill 84, with over 96% of wagers placed online through licensed mobile operators including DraftKings, FanDuel and BetMGM. Each state casino can partner with up to three sportsbook operators, though a legislative moratorium introduced in 2025 has frozen new operator contracts through fiscal year 2026.
Pari-mutuel wagering on horse racing is technically legal in Kansas, but all licensed racetracks in the state closed in 2008. Live horse racing no longer takes place in Kansas. Historical horse racing terminal facilities have been approved for development at two locations — Diamond Jo Park City and Wichita Greyhound Park — which are expected to bring a new form of pari-mutuel wagering back to the state.
