Kansas has a more active casino scene than most visitors expect. The Sunflower State is home to ten casinos (four commercial properties and six tribal casinos) spread across a state more commonly associated with prairies, sunflowers, and Wild West heritage. The commercial casinos operate under a structure unique to Kansas, where the state holds the licences and owns the gaming equipment while private operators run the floor. It is an arrangement worth understanding before you visit, and we explain it in full below. Prefer to play from home? We also cover the best online casinos available to Kansas players, but on this page we focus strictly on land-based venues.

Land-Based Casinos In Kansas

Kansas has ten casinos in total, four commercial properties and six tribal casinos, but the commercial side operates in a way you will not find anywhere else in the United States.

When Kansas legalised casino gambling through the Kansas Expanded Lottery Act in 2007, it faced a constitutional hurdle. The Kansas constitution only permits state-run lottery facilities, so a conventional commercial casino model was not an option. The solution was a hybrid arrangement: the state holds the gaming licences and owns the equipment on the floor, while private operators are contracted to manage and run each property day to day. The Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission oversees the whole operation.

In practice, visiting one of the four commercial casinos feels no different from visiting a privately run property elsewhere. Each sits within one of four designated gaming zones, with one commercial property permitted per zone. The six tribal casinos operate separately under federally approved gaming compacts and are not subject to the same lottery framework.

Did You Know?

Boot Hill Casino and Resort takes its name from one of the most infamous burial grounds in the American West. Dodge City's original Boot Hill cemetery earned its name in the 1870s from the lawless cowboys and outlaws who were buried there still wearing their boots — a sign they had died violently rather than peacefully in bed. The town was home to Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, and Doc Holliday, and was once described as the wickedest little city in America. Today you can visit the Boot Hill Museum just a short drive from the casino, where costumed actors still stage gunfight re-enactments on Front Street.

State-Licensed Commercial Casinos

Kansas's four commercial casinos are each managed by a major private operator under contract with the state. All four offer slots, table games, and retail sportsbooks, with online betting available statewide through their affiliated apps.

  • Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway, Kansas City: Operated by Penn Entertainment, this is the northeast zone property and one of the largest gaming floors in the state at around 100,000 square feet. More than 1,500 slot machines, 35 table games, a live poker room, and a theScore Bet Sportsbook. No hotel on site, but the casino sits alongside the Kansas Speedway NASCAR track and Legends Field, home of the Kansas City Monarchs baseball team. Three restaurants include Turn 2 with direct racetrack views.
  • Kansas Star Casino, Mulvane: The south central zone property and the closest casino to Wichita, around 17 miles south of the city. Operated by Boyd Gaming with more than 1,300 slot machines, 43 table games, a FanDuel Sportsbook, and a connected Hampton Inn and Suites with 300 rooms.
  • Kansas Crossing Casino and Hotel, Pittsburg: The southeast zone property, operated by Caesars Entertainment. Slots, table games, an on-site hotel, and sportsbook partnerships with both Caesars and BetMGM.
  • Boot Hill Casino and Resort, Dodge City: The southwest zone property sitting in the heart of Wild West country. Slots, table games, and a DraftKings Sportsbook retail facility.

Tribal Casinos

Kansas's six tribal casinos operate under federally approved gaming compacts between the state and individual tribes, independently of the state lottery framework that governs the commercial properties. The offering varies considerably across the six properties, from full resort experiences to smaller slot-focused venues.

  • Prairie Band Casino and Resort, Mayetta: The largest and most fully featured tribal casino in Kansas, owned by the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation and located just 15 minutes north of Topeka. The 35,000 square foot gaming floor has 1,200 slot machines, 25 table games, and bingo. Prairie Band opened the first tribal sportsbook in Kansas in January 2024. The resort has a 297-room hotel, three restaurants including 3 Fires Steakhouse, the Firekeeper Golf Course (rated the best course you can play in Kansas by Golfweek), and an RV park. A major expansion approved in January 2025 will add a new hotel tower, spa, and enlarged pool.
  • Crosswinds Casino, Park City: Owned by the Wyandotte Nation of Oklahoma and located just north of Wichita. Operates under Class II gaming rules, which means no live table games and no sportsbook. A significant expansion breaking ground in summer 2027 will add a hotel and expanded casino floor.
  • 7th Street Casino, Kansas City: Owned by the Wyandotte Nation of Oklahoma. Slots and gaming in an urban Kansas City location.
  • Golden Eagle Casino, Horton: Owned by the Kickapoo Tribe in Kansas. Slots and table games in a smaller, regional setting.
  • Casino White Cloud, White Cloud: Owned by the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska. Sports betting compact approved in 2024.
  • Sac and Fox Casino, Powhattan: Owned by the Sac and Fox Nation of Missouri in Kansas and Nebraska. Sports betting compact approved in 2025.

Sports Betting in Kansas

Kansas legalised both retail and online sports betting in May 2022 when Governor Laura Kelly signed Senate Bill 84 into law. The first legal wagers were placed on September 1, 2022, making Kansas one of the earlier states to launch a fully operational market with both in-person and mobile options available from day one.

How it works

Each of the four state-licensed commercial casinos can partner with up to three online sportsbook operators, allowing major national brands to offer betting both at retail locations inside the casinos and through their apps statewide. Six operators are currently licensed: FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars, Fanatics, and theScore Bet. Bet365 launched independently in August 2025. On the tribal side, Prairie Band Casino opened the first tribal sportsbook in January 2024, with compacts for Sac and Fox Casino and Casino White Cloud approved in 2023 and 2024 respectively.

What you can and cannot bet on

Betting is available on professional and college sports, but Kansas bettors cannot wager on in-state college teams including the Kansas Jayhawks, Kansas State Wildcats, or Wichita State Shockers. College player props are also prohibited statewide regardless of which team is involved. The Kansas City Chiefs and Royals are both popular betting options despite being technically based across the border in Missouri.

Future

In April 2025 the Kansas legislature passed a budget provision preventing the Kansas Lottery from negotiating any new or renewed sportsbook contracts until July 2026. All current licences are due to expire in August 2027. The existing operators remain fully active in the meantime, but the long-term regulatory model is under active review, with a single operator monopoly among the options being discussed. It is a developing situation worth monitoring.

Did You Know?

Kansas has quietly built up a $26 million war chest using sports betting tax revenue — and it has a very specific target in mind. Under state law, 80% of sports wagering tax receipts, after a small allocation to a white collar crime fund, flows into a dedicated professional sports attraction fund. The goal is to lure the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals across the state line from Missouri. Both franchises are based in Kansas City, Missouri, and Kansas has been actively positioning itself as a potential new home. It is one of the more creative uses of gambling tax revenue anywhere in the country, essentially using sports betting profits to fund a bid to poach two of America's most iconic sports franchises from a neighboring state.

Your First Visit to a Kansas Casino

Kansas is a big state and the casinos are spread across it, so a little planning goes a long way. Here are a few things worth knowing before you go.

Know which zone you are heading to

The four commercial casinos each serve a distinct region. Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway is the go-to for Kansas City visitors, Kansas Star is the Wichita option, Kansas Crossing serves southeast Kansas, and Boot Hill is a destination in its own right given its Dodge City setting. If you are travelling specifically to gamble rather than combining it with a trip, it is worth picking the property closest to you rather than assuming one is significantly better than another.

There is no casino in Wichita

Despite being the largest city in Kansas, Wichita has no casino within its limits. Kansas Star Casino in Mulvane is the closest option at around 17 miles south of the city centre, and is straightforward to reach from the interstate.

Dodge City is worth the trip

Boot Hill Casino sits in one of the most historically rich towns in the American West. The Boot Hill Museum, Front Street gunfight re-enactments, and the original Boot Hill cemetery are all within easy reach of the casino, making Dodge City a genuinely worthwhile overnight destination rather than just a casino stop.

Bring ID

The minimum gambling age at all Kansas casinos is 21. Photo ID will be required on entry so make sure you have it with you.

Prairie Band is the pick for a full resort stay

If you want a hotel, golf, dining, and a full resort experience under one roof, Prairie Band Casino and Resort near Topeka is the strongest all-round option among the tribal properties. The Firekeeper Golf Course alone makes it worth considering as a dedicated weekend trip.
