Kansas has a complicated history with gambling. The state did not legalize casino gaming until 2007, and even then it did so with considerable reluctance, authorizing just four commercial casinos statewide under direct contract with the Kansas Lottery. Each one required a local referendum to proceed. Sumner County, where Kansas Star now sits, had already passed an advisory measure in favor of gaming back in 2005, which meant Mulvane was ready and waiting when the licenses were finally awarded. The permanent casino opened in December 2012, and the region around Wichita has not looked back since.
What emerged from that process is the dominant casino destination in south-central Kansas. Kansas Star draws visitors from Wichita, from across the state, and from neighboring states, and at 70,000-plus square feet of gaming space it has the scale to justify the drive from almost anywhere within a few hours.
Kansas Star sits at 777 Kansas Star Drive in Mulvane, right off Exit 33 on the Kansas Turnpike (I-35), about 20 miles south of downtown Wichita. The interstate access is as convenient as casino access gets, and the property is easy to find with clear signage from the highway. Free parking is plentiful in surface lots on site. For visitors coming from Wichita, the drive takes around 25 minutes in normal traffic.
The casino operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Walking into Kansas Star, the scale of the gaming floor makes an immediate impression. At over 70,000 square feet, this is a substantial operation with plenty of room to move even on busy evenings. The layout is well organized, with slots dominating the main floor, table games in dedicated areas, and the poker room set apart by itself.
The property carries the weight of being the only casino option for a large portion of Kansas, which means it serves a very wide range of players from casual visitors to dedicated regulars. The atmosphere is lively and the staff were genuinely rather lovely on my visit. Smoking is permitted on the casino floor, though, so make sure you’re aware of that and accepting before you travel.
One interesting quirk of Kansas Star's setup: because it operates under a Kansas Lottery contract rather than as a tribal casino, it is subject to state-mandated payout minimums. The casino's own management has confirmed machines are set to pay out at least 87% over their lifetime, which is actually a reassuring degree of transparency compared to many competitors.
With more than 50 live table games on the floor, Kansas Star has one of the stronger table game selections in the region. The lineup includes a dedicated Asian Gaming pit alongside the standard favourites. On my visit I found:
The no-ante Blackjack variant is worth highlighting as it eliminates the ante bet, which gives players a slightly different strategic experience from standard Blackjack. The Asian Gaming pit caters specifically to baccarat and related game enthusiasts, reflecting the broader demographic reach of the property. Table minimums can run a little high during peak periods, though, which is worth bearing in mind for casual players on a tighter budget.
Kansas Star has a dedicated 8-table live poker room offering cash games and tournaments. It is the most active poker room in the Wichita region and draws a loyal following of regular players. Texas Hold'Em is the primary game, with tournaments running regularly throughout the week. For players visiting from out of state, it is worth checking the current schedule on the Boyd Gaming website before arriving.
With over 1,770 slot machines, Kansas Star has one of the largest slot floors in Kansas by a considerable margin. The selection covers the full range from penny games to higher denomination machines, with all the major popular titles represented and the floor regularly refreshed with new releases. A dedicated high limit area is available for players who prefer bigger stakes.
The Kansas Gaming Commission regulates the property and publishes performance data, providing a level of accountability that is less common at tribally-operated casinos in other states.
Kansas Star Sportsbook covers all major US sports including NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, college football, and college basketball, plus golf, boxing, soccer, and motorsports. Spreads, single bets, parlays, and futures are all available. The sportsbook is a comfortable space for watching and wagering, and is one of the better-equipped betting environments in the region.
Kansas Star uses the Boyd Rewards loyalty program, which operates across Boyd Gaming's portfolio of properties nationwide. Members earn points through slot and table game play, which can be redeemed for free play, dining credits, hotel stays, and entertainment. The program has multiple tier levels with escalating benefits, and the Life Rewarded tagline reflects Boyd's positioning of the program as a genuine lifestyle benefit rather than just a basic comp system.
The hotel at Kansas Star is a 300-room Hampton Inn and Suites, which sits adjacent to the casino and is connected directly to the property. At 300 rooms it is a substantial offering for a regional casino, and the Hampton Inn brand standard means guests know broadly what to expect: clean, comfortable rooms with reliable amenities and the Hampton free hot breakfast included each morning.
The hotel expanded from 150 to 300 rooms in August 2014, reflecting the demand the casino was generating from the Wichita region and beyond. The connection to the casino is convenient, and the Hampton brand's reputation for consistency makes it a dependable choice for overnight visits.
Kansas Star significantly upgraded its dining lineup in early 2025 with the addition of the Star Market Food Hall, bringing the total number of dining concepts to six.
| Restaurant | Cuisine | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Woodfire Grille | Fine dining, steaks, seafood | $$$ |
| Tin Lizard Bar and Grill | American casual, burgers, ribs | $$ |
| 35 Brew Street | Coffee, pastries, sandwiches | $ |
| Stella Bistro | Casual bistro fare | $$ |
| Asian Noodle | Asian noodles and street food | $ |
| Taqueria Buena | Mexican casual | $ |
Woodfire Grille is the standout, an award-winning fine dining restaurant that has earned OpenTable Diners' Choice recognition and is consistently rated among the best restaurants in the Wichita area. The Tin Lizard Bar and Grill is the lively mid-range option, open daily until 2am with live entertainment on Fridays and a menu built around root beer BBQ baby back ribs, Angus beef burgers, and comfort food classics.
The Star Market Food Hall, which opened in March 2025, is the first food hall concept both at the casino and in the wider Wichita region. The 140-seat communal space brings the remaining four concepts together under one roof and operates daily from 8am to 3am, giving players flexible casual dining options at almost any hour.
There is no pool or spa at Kansas Star Casino itself. The Hampton Inn and Suites hotel has its own facilities, which typically include a fitness center for guests. The casino also has equestrian facilities on the broader property site, which is a fairly unusual amenity and reflects the agricultural character of the Sumner County setting.
Entertainment is one of Kansas Star's genuine strengths and a significant reason why people travel specifically to the property rather than just passing through.
The Kansas Star Arena is a 6,500-seat multipurpose venue that hosts major touring artists, championship rodeo, mixed martial arts events, pageants, and more throughout the year. It is south-central Kansas' primary large-scale entertainment venue and regularly attracts names that would otherwise not visit the Wichita market at all. The arena was converted from the original temporary casino building, which is a pleasingly efficient piece of property management.
The Kansas Star Event Center is an 11,000-square-foot adjacent venue handling mid-size events, private bookings, and community programming. Together the two venues give Kansas Star an entertainment footprint that most regional casino competitors cannot match.
Kansas Star Casino is the dominant gaming and entertainment destination in south-central Kansas, and it has earned that position by consistently investing in its property. The gaming floor is large and well-stocked, the poker room draws a loyal regional following, and the dining lineup received a meaningful upgrade with the Star Market Food Hall in 2025. The Woodfire Grille alone is worth a dinner reservation, and the Kansas Star Arena regularly brings entertainment to the region that would otherwise require a trip to Wichita or further afield.
The smoking floor and the Hampton Inn hotel rather than a branded resort hotel are the two most obvious limitations relative to larger casino destinations. Neither is a dealbreaker for the core audience, and the property's unique position as one of only four commercial casinos in Kansas means it has a captive regional market that most casino operators would envy. For anyone in the Wichita area looking for a full casino experience, this is comfortably your best option.
