Danny Myers claimed the UK Poker League (UKPL) Main Event title at Grosvenor Casino in Liverpool this weekend, defeating Cieran Tighe heads-up in a thrilling finish that showcased the strength of the city’s poker scene.
In the decisive hand, Myers’ ace-king held firm against Tighe’s ace-three, sealing the win and marking a milestone in the rising player’s career. Tighe, who only began playing poker tournaments in August last year, finished runner-up for £25,430. Myers’ victory adds another trophy to his collection and cements his reputation as one of the UK circuit’s most consistent performers.
“It was a really good game, especially because there was a lot of limping on the button, so we got to see plenty of flops,” Myers said moments after his win.
“There was a lot of dynamic play going on, a great final table to be part of.”
The win carried extra meaning for Myers, who relished the chance to take down a title in front of a local crowd.
“To be honest, it was really well run. The structures were perfect,” he said. “It’s great to win on home turf.”
Myers, who had previously logged just one other result in Liverpool, described the event as a “fantastic watch” and praised the standard of play across the field.
“There was no table where I thought, ‘this is recreational.’ Every player brought something different,” he added.
Runner-up Cieran Tighe’s performance drew attention across the room. Though relatively new to the live tournament scene, Tighe demonstrated composure throughout the final table, navigating a stacked field that included seasoned regulars.

Third place went to Carl Burcher (pictured), who had entered the final stages as chip leader but fell short after a pair of tough hands. Burcher’s king-jack lost to pocket sixes and ace-king in a pivotal three-way all-in for the title. Moments later, his ace-king couldn’t hold against another pair of sixes as Tighe completed a flush on the river.
Despite the setbacks, Burcher collected £17,510 for his third-place finish.

The event was part of the Grosvenor UK Poker League, a series that continues to attract top talent nationwide. Grosvenor Casinos, known as the “heartbeat of UK poker” pays out more than £20 million annually in tournament prizes and is home to major events like The Goliath.
For Myers, the Liverpool win was as much about the atmosphere as the trophy.
“It’s great to have everyone cheering you on,” he said, clutching the silverware that he joked would “go straight on the mantlepiece.”
He’ll next appear at the UKPL Coventry Grand Final later this year, where he’s expected to bring that same trophy along as his new “card protector.”

Most of my career was spent in teaching including at one of the UK’s top private schools. I left London in 2000 and set up home in Wales raising four beautiful children. I enrolled at University where I studied Photography and film and gained a Degree and subsequently a Masters Degree. In 2014 I helped launch a new local newspaper and managed to get front and back page as well as 6 filler pages on a weekly basis. I saw that journalism was changing and was a pioneer of hyperlocal news in Wales. In 2017 I started one of the first 24/7 free independent news sites for Wales. Having taken that to a successful business model I was keen for a new challenge. Joining the company is exciting for me especially as it is a new role in Europe. I am keen to establish myself and help others to do the same.
