While revenues at Ohio casino resorts rose, Governor Mike DeWine has recently publicly called for a significant change to the online sports betting landscape in Ohio. The governor advised the Ohio Casino Control Commission to ban player prop bets, effectively any wager on a player that does not include the game’s outcome.
According to the governor, the MLB, NFL, NBA, WNBA, NHL, and MLS support his push for a ban. In January 2024, the Ohio Casino Control Commission agreed to ban player prop bets for collegiate events after a letter from NCAA President Charlie Baker.
DeWine said, “The evidence that prop betting is harming athletics in Ohio is reaching critical mass. The harm to athletes and the integrity of the game is clear, and the benefits are not worth the harm. The prop betting experiment in this country has failed badly."
Governor DeWine has also recently expressed his opposition to the legalization of Ohio online casinos, which may be good news for land-based operators looking to continue to grow.
