A Southampton man turned a casual £1 wager into a £31,000 windfall at Grosvenor Casino Southampton after being dealt a rare straight flush while playing Ultimate Texas Hold’em on October 22.
The player, who asked to remain anonymous, was at the casino with friends when the life-changing hand appeared.
“I couldn’t quite believe it when the dealer confirmed the jackpot,” he said.
“My friends were cheering, and it all happened so fast. It’s not every day you see a straight flush like that. I don’t have any big plans for the money yet, I’m just going to save it for now, but I did take my mates out for a nice meal to celebrate.”
Located on West Quay Road, the Grosvenor Casino is in the midst of a £700,000 refurbishment that will see updated interiors, new gaming tables, and enhanced hospitality spaces. The investment aims to modernize one of Southampton’s most popular entertainment venues and reinforce its role in the city’s nightlife.
Conor Toner, general manager at Grosvenor Casino Southampton, said:
“It’s always fantastic to see one of our regular players hit a jackpot, and this win created such a great buzz throughout the casino.”
The renovation comes as Grosvenor Casinos, one of the UK’s largest casino operators under the Rank Group PLC, continues to upgrade its venues nationwide, blending traditional table gaming with new digital experiences.
Stories like this highlight the enduring appeal of in-person casino play, where the social aspect and unpredictability of table games still captivate players in an era increasingly dominated by online gaming. The Grosvenor Southampton refurbishment also signals confidence in the UK’s land-based gaming market amid a competitive entertainment landscape.
Other big wins at Grosvenor casinos in 20225 incude a mystery man from London who reportedly turned a £1 bet into £300,000 on the electronic roulette game “Going for Gold” at Grosvenor Casino The Victoria in February 2025.
At Grosvenor Casino Glasgow Riverboat, a father from Rutherglen hit a £122,000 jackpot using a £1 bonus chip while playing blackjack.
At Grosvenor Casino Newcastle a woman turned a 33p bet into approximately £20,000 on a slot machine.
At Grosvenor Casino Bayswater a “Bad Beat” poker jackpot of around £140,000 was paid out, with one player winning about £42,000.

Most of my career was spent in teaching including at one of the UK’s top private schools. I left London in 2000 and set up home in Wales raising four beautiful children. I enrolled at University where I studied Photography and film and gained a Degree and subsequently a Masters Degree. In 2014 I helped launch a new local newspaper and managed to get front and back page as well as 6 filler pages on a weekly basis. I saw that journalism was changing and was a pioneer of hyperlocal news in Wales. In 2017 I started one of the first 24/7 free independent news sites for Wales. Having taken that to a successful business model I was keen for a new challenge. Joining the company is exciting for me especially as it is a new role in Europe. I am keen to establish myself and help others to do the same.
