Three people have been sentenced for cheating offences relating to bets placed on the date of the 2024 General Election, the Gambling Commission has confirmed. Anthony Lee, Laura Lee and Amy Hind appeared at Southwark Crown Court on 23 October 2026, having previously pleaded guilty to offences under section 42 of the Gambling Act 2005.

The case is the first of its kind for the regulator. Casinos.com reported when the Commission first said it was looking at an MP's election-date bet, and the prosecutions that followed have now produced their first sentences, with a further defendant still awaiting his.

Sentences Handed Down at Southwark Crown Court

Anthony Lee received 10 months and two weeks' imprisonment on each count, to run concurrently and suspended for 12 months, plus 100 hours of unpaid work. Laura Lee was given four months and two weeks, suspended for 12 months, with 40 hours of unpaid work. Amy Hind received six months, also suspended for 12 months, with 50 hours of unpaid work.

All three are subject to a 12-month probation requirement and a 12-month prohibited activity requirement that bars them from using online gambling applications. Anthony Lee and Laura Lee must each pay £1,000 in prosecution costs. No costs order was made against Amy Hind.

What the Court Heard

The court heard that then Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced the election date on 22 May 2024. Before that, there had been significant planning for a 4 July election, including discussions at 10 Downing Street and among staff at Conservative Campaign Headquarters. In the weeks beforehand, gambling operators were offering markets on when the election would be held.

Anthony Lee was the Conservative Party's Director of Campaigning and was party to confidential discussions about the timing. He used that information to place bets and passed it to his wife, Laura Lee. She was Head of International for the party and a Conservative candidate at the election, and bet on the date using what he told her.

Amy Hind had previously worked for the Conservative Party and was working for the NHS at the time. She placed bets after receiving confidential information about when the election would be called, the court was told.

"This is a significant case and a first of its kind for the Commission, demonstrating our commitment to protecting the integrity of betting markets."

Katharine Diamond, the Commission's General Counsel, made the comment in the regulator's announcement. She added that betting markets must be fair and must not be undermined by people using confidential information for their own benefit, and that the regulator will keep investigating suspected criminal activity.

More Cases Still to Come

The Commission has previously announced that Craig Williams pleaded guilty to an offence of cheating in relation to betting on the election date. He will be sentenced at a later date.

Simon Chatfield, Paul Place, Iain Makepeace, James Ward, Thomas James, Russell George, Charlotte Lang, Jacob Willmer, Jeremy Hunt and Nick Mason are also charged with cheating offences relating to bets on the election date. They are due to stand trial in September 2027 and January 2028.

For operators, the case is a reminder that the Commission treats insider-information betting as a criminal matter under the Gambling Act, not only a licensing one. Bookmakers that price political and novelty markets are the ones whose odds can be moved by people with privileged knowledge, and the regulator has now shown it will pursue those people through the courts.
