James Corden and Ruth Jones’ Apple TV+ series "The Choir" sparks odds on Gavin & Stacey cast members making a return.
Gavin & Stacey co-creators James Corden And Ruth Jones have been busy since the show's epic Christmas Day finale last year.
The pair have been writing another programme, and have reportedly signed a multi-million-dollar deal with Apple TV+ to air the series. According to The Sun newspaper, James and Ruth have put pen to paper on a comedy drama with an all-British cast - sound familiar?
A show insider told the publication, "As you might expect, it is uplifting, gentle and very funny.
"They wanted to bring something full of heart and warmth back to screens: water cooler moments for all the family. Casting has yet to begin but everyone involved so far is incredibly excited to get going."
Following the news, fans have been busy speculating about whether we will see some familiar faces from Gavin & Stacey.
James and Ruth are both expected to appear in the series, which is called The Choir, according to Deadline.
The beloved Gavin & Stacey cast, including James Corden, Ruth Jones, Joanna Page and Mathew Horne, who fans hope could reunite in "The Choir."
The site reports that the co-writers will portray brother and sister Ben and Lisa, who haven't seen each other for years. But after an unexpected event, Ben is set to return to the small English town where his estranged family live.
One Gavin & Stacey star who is likely to be at the top of James and Ruth's wish list to appear alongside them is Sheridan Smith.
She had a bit part in the BBC sitcom, as James' character Smithy's sister Rudi, but she is used to excelling in lead roles of British TV dramas.
Odds on Gavin & Stacey Cast Appearing in 'The Choir' | ||
|---|---|---|
Actor / Actress | Odds | Implied Probability (%) |
Sheridan Smith | 6/4 | 40.0% |
Rob Brydon | 15/8 | 34.8% |
Matt Lucas | 2/1 | 33.3% |
Alison Steadman | 5/2 | 28.6% |
Larry Lamb | 3/1 | 25.0% |
Mathew Horne | 7/2 | 22.2% |
Mathew Baynton | 4/1 | 20.0% |
Julia Davis | 5/1 | 16.7% |
Joanna Page | 6/1 | 14.3% |
Laura Aikman | 7/1 | 12.5% |
Adrian Scarborough | 8/1 | 11.1% |
Melanie Walters | 10/1 | 9.1% |
James previously told "Good Housekeeping" of Sheridan: "As a performer, she’s so instinctive. She can do comedy, tragedy and everything in between. Her instincts are always bang-on.
"She has an ability to represent us, the audience, whatever part she’s playing. She is all of us, on stage or screen. It’s the rarest of gifts. I think she’ll be regarded as one of the greats."
It would be a real coup for "The Choir" to land someone of Sheridan's talents, and she is 6/4 favourite to appear in James and Ruth's new series.
Ruth is also known to be close to "Gavin & Stacey"'s Rob Brydon, who once admitted she is the closest thing he has to a sister.
It's just 15/8 that the Uncle Bryn star follows her over to Apple TV+.
What's more, Alison Steadman (5/2) and Larry Lamb (3/1) will likely be in contention for roles.
The pair played Gavin's parents Pam and Mick Shipman, in the beloved BBC series, and both Ruth and James starred alongside Alison in the 2000s ITV drama "Fat Friends."
Larry did most of the talking during the show's 2025 National Television Awards acceptance speech, after the programme scooped the Comedy accolade.
Matt Lucas isn't exactly renowned for his cameo in "Gavin & Stacey" - but he made a great impression on Smithy as stag organiser Jammy.
If Ruth and James are looking for some big-name British stars to get "The Choir" off to a pitch-perfect start, then Matt could be a masterstroke signing.
He is just 2/1 to join the show, while Gavin himself, Mathew Horne, is just 7/2, and Joanna Page, who portrayed Stacey, is 6/1.
Should the BBC sitcom's titular stars appear in Ruth and James' new programme they would have to play different types of characters to avoid drawing comparisons to their Gavin and Stacey roles, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see either, or both, rock up in "The Choir."
James' The Wrong Mans co-star Mathew Baynton (4/1) - who portrayed Gavin & Stacey's Deano - is also likely to be in contention, as is Julia Davis.
Julia portrayed "Gavin & Stacey"'s argumentative Dawn Sutcliffe brilliantly, and she knows Ruth well after they appeared in the sitcom "Nighty Night."
She is 5/1 for an appearance in "The Choir," just shorter than her on-screen Gavin & Stacey husband, Adrian Scarborough (8/1), who portrayed the equally as argumentative Pete Sutcliffe in the show.
Laura Aikman made just two appearances in "Gavin & Stacey," in the finale and the penultimate episode, as Smithy's nearly-wife Sonia.
She recently impressed as Rachel in the hard-hitting BBC thriller "This City is Ours" and is 7/1 to make the move to Ruth and James' Apple TV+ programme.
Apple TV+ Europe boss Jay Hunt is said to have commissioned the show for the streamer.
She has done well with the likes of "Slow Horses" and "Bad Sisters" in the past - but how will "The Choir" rate on the service?
Odds on 'The Choir' Becoming Apple TV+’s Number 1 Series | ||
|---|---|---|
Outcome | Odds | Implied Probability (%) |
No | 1/2 | 66.7% |
Yes | 2/1 | 33.3% |
Apple TV+ keeps its viewership data closely guarded, so it's not known how well the brand-new show would have to rate to overcome some of the service's current stars.
However, in February it was revealed the second series of the sci-fi psychological thriller "Severance" - which features Adam Scott and is executive produced by Ben Stiller - had broken the platform's records to become its best-ever rated show.
The programme became the most-watched series worldwide, defeating the likes of "Ted Lasso."
Matt Cherniss, head of programming, Apple TV+, said at the time, "The series has become an obsession for audiences all over the world and we can’t wait for people to continue to experience all the masterful twists and turns as the rest of the season unfolds."
Quite like "Gavin & Stacey" became an obsession for Britain's TV watchers, James and Ruth will hope "The Choir" can sing from the same hymn sheet.
However, the show has some way to go to hit the high notes of the likes of "Severance," and, for now, it's 1/2 that the programme won't knock the Dan Erickson-created programme off its peak.
