Are you a child of the 90’s or a mere whippersnapper from the Noughties? From Britpop romance to ringtone love songs, Bongo’s Bingo wants Bournemouth to decide which era really had the magic.
Bournemouth is going retro this spring, with a musical throwback showdown that pits two iconic decades head-to-head. Bongo's Bingo, the cult nightlife phenomenon, is bringing its 90s vs 00s special to the O2 Academy for two nights only: Friday, 10 April and Friday, 24 April.
Known for its unfiltered mix of party anthems, rave energy, chaotic bingo, and questionable prizes (think cardboard cutouts, fluffy unicorns, and mobility scooters), Bongo's Bingo offers something different: a night out that hits you in the feels as much as on the dancefloor.
The 1990s and 2000s were both packed with pop culture milestones, but they brought very different energies. The 90s were about optimism, rebellion, and VHS mixtapes. Picture Spice Girls, "Trainspotting," and slow-dances to Oasis under cheap disco balls. The casino world flirted with flash and flair, as seen in cult classics like Casino (1995), which showed the high-stakes glamour and grit of Vegas life.
Fast-forward to the 00s, and things got faster, darker, and way more digital. This was the era of the iPod, text-based flirting, Ocean's Eleven heists, and ringtone romance. Pop-punk met electro, poker hit prime-time TV, and romantic comedies like Love Actually and Serendipity turned chance encounters into modern fairytales.
Bongo's Bingo taps into that sense of musical and emotional identity. Every track played on the night isn't just for dancing, it's a throwback to your first kiss, your first festival, or that awkward holiday hook-up to a Justin Timberlake song.
Bournemouth has long thrived on nostalgia-led nightlife, but Bongo's Bingo adds a unique twist. It doesn’t just remix the music, it turns retro into a game. Audience members can expect hands-in-the-air singalongs, themed prizes from the era, and the occasional surprise round that feels like a slot machine of sheer chaos.
"It brings people together in such a pure way," said one returning guest from last year’s show. "One minute you're belting out Blue, the next you're hugging a stranger over a bingo win."

That blend of chaos and connection is why it sells out fast. It’s a shared love letter to dodgy dance moves, denim mini skirts, Nokia ringtones, and film soundtracks that still make you cry. In a town with limited large-scale nightlife experiences outside of the summer season, these spring shows bring real draw.
Whether you're repping the 90s with glowsticks and garage or living for the Y2K aesthetic of low-rise jeans and Justin Timberlake, there’s space for everyone. Expect tracks from Britney Spears, So Solid Crew, Blink-182, All Saints, and more, all blasted in between bingo calls and bonus rounds.
Tickets are available now through the official Bongo’s Bingo website, but don’t hang about, these dates typically sell out.
So what's your bet? Will it be the slow jam charm of 90s romance or the digital drama of 00s love? For Bournemouth, it's a full house either way.

Most of my career was spent in teaching including at one of the UK’s top private schools. I left London in 2000 and set up home in Wales raising four beautiful children. I enrolled at University where I studied Photography and film and gained a Degree and subsequently a Masters Degree. In 2014 I helped launch a new local newspaper and managed to get front and back page as well as 6 filler pages on a weekly basis. I saw that journalism was changing and was a pioneer of hyperlocal news in Wales. In 2017 I started one of the first 24/7 free independent news sites for Wales. Having taken that to a successful business model I was keen for a new challenge. Joining the company is exciting for me especially as it is a new role in Europe. I am keen to establish myself and help others to do the same.
