Victoria Gate's Merkur Rebrand Moves Forward With Leeds Council Signage Application

Planning Application Seeks New Merkur Signage

Leeds' Victoria Gate Casino is set to be rebranded after new owner Merkur Casino Entertainment UK applied to Leeds City Council for permission to replace the venue's exterior signage.

The planning application covers new advertising and branding on the Eastgate building, where Victoria Gate's 24-hour casino has operated since 2016. A design report submitted with the application states: "The current proposals comprise the replacement of the existing Victoria Gate Casino signage with updated Merkur Casino branding associated with the lawful operation of the premises."

The report adds that the new signage has been "carefully designed to reflect the new branding whilst remaining proportionate to the scale and architecture of the host building," and argues the changes will not affect pedestrian safety, traffic sightlines or the character of nearby listed buildings.

Licence Transferred to Merkur in July

Milton Keynes-based Merkur Casino Entertainment UK acquired Victoria Gate Casino earlier this year, with the large casino licence for the venue transferred from previous operator VGC Leeds Ltd to Merkur in July. The move made Victoria Gate the German operator's third UK casino as it continues to expand its land-based portfolio.

"Leeds is a vibrant city with a strong hospitality and entertainment scene, and we believe Victoria Gate Casino represents an exciting opportunity for MERKUR as we continue to grow our UK casino portfolio," the company said on announcing the acquisition.

Merkur has said it remains committed to investing in quality land-based leisure venues in the UK. The Eastgate site previously reopened under the MERKUR brand on 13 July following a short closure, and the link_text_goes_here for the venue's transition.

The rebrand comes after a difficult period for Victoria Gate's previous operator. Casinos.com previously reported that link_text_goes_here over money laundering concerns, ahead of the ownership change now completing under Merkur.

Leeds City Council has yet to determine the signage application. If approved, Merkur is expected to complete the exterior rebrand alongside the operational changes already under way inside the venue.

Part of a Wider UK Push by Merkur

Victoria Gate has operated as a 24-hour casino since the Eastgate development opened in 2016, offering table games, electronic gaming machines and a poker room alongside a large retail and leisure complex in the city centre. It has been one of Leeds' more prominent land-based gambling venues, and the change of ownership is being watched closely by other operators in the city's hospitality sector.

Merkur's UK expansion comes as several land-based casino groups reassess their portfolios amid rising costs and the prospect of further gambling tax changes at the national level. By taking on an established, high-profile venue like Victoria Gate rather than building from scratch, the German operator is betting that a recognisable Leeds location with an existing customer base will help it establish its brand in the UK casino market more quickly than opening a new site outright.

For Leeds, the change of ownership brings a degree of stability after a period of uncertainty around the venue's licence and its previous operator. Local businesses in the Victoria Gate development have said a smooth transition to the new brand, without a prolonged closure, would be the best outcome for footfall across the wider retail and leisure complex.
