Sunderland AFC has agreed a multi-year sponsorship deal with Shuffle, a crypto-focused online casino and sports betting platform that holds no UK Gambling Commission licence, the club confirmed on 11 September 2026.
Shuffle will appear as the "sleeve partner" on Sunderland's shirts under the deal, according to SBC News. The Curaçao-headquartered operator's only gambling licence is issued by the Curaçao Gaming Control Board; the Blask Index ranks it among the top 50 operators in markets including Canada, France, Pakistan and Switzerland, but it is not authorised to offer gambling services to customers in Great Britain.
Sunderland becomes the latest Premier League club to strike a sponsorship deal with a gambling brand lacking UK authorisation, following Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United. The arrangement mirrors Everton's partnership with Stake, whose logo also appears on player sleeves rather than shirt fronts, after the Premier League's ban on front-of-shirt gambling sponsorship took effect this year.
Under the deal, Shuffle is set to provide fan activations, influencer marketing and exclusive content for Sunderland supporters, raising questions about whether an operator whose core product cannot legally be offered to UK customers should be running promotional activity aimed at matchgoing fans.
Scott McCubbin, chief commercial officer at Sunderland, said: "We are delighted to welcome Shuffle as our Official Sleeve Partner. There is a strong alignment between our two brands, both of which have ambitious plans for growth and a determination to challenge at the highest level."
The Sunderland deal comes as pressure builds on both the government and the Premier League to intervene on the promotion of unlicensed gambling brands in English football. A Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport consultation on banning sponsorship deals with operators that lack UK licences closed this week, and any long-term future for the Shuffle partnership will depend on its outcome.
Sunderland is currently the only Premier League club without a front-of-shirt sponsor, having not replaced its previous arrangement since the front-of-shirt gambling sponsorship ban came into effect. The club said it intended to work "closely" with Shuffle, adding that the brands were aligned by their "clear ambition to challenge the established order, grow their global presence and compete at the highest level."
The Gambling Commission has repeatedly warned that operators without a UK licence offer no consumer protections to British customers who use them, regardless of any high-profile sponsorship deals lending them visibility. A UK licence requires operators to meet standards on player safety, complaint handling and anti-money laundering checks that unlicensed platforms are not obliged to follow.
Shuffle is not alone in using football sponsorship to build a UK profile without holding a UK licence; several crypto-linked betting brands have taken similar sleeve or training-kit deals with English clubs in the past two seasons, betting that fan visibility will outweigh the absence of local authorisation. Whether that calculation survives the DCMS consultation's outcome is now an open question for Sunderland and the clubs that follow its lead.
