Championship Gambling Shirt Sponsors Hold Steady Despite Premier League Ban

The number of English Championship clubs carrying a gambling company as their main front-of-shirt sponsor has held steady rather than surged this season, despite the Premier League's new ban on the same deals, according to industry analysts.

Trade publication EGR reported that seven second-tier clubs will feature betting or gaming operators as their principal shirt partner in the 2026-27 campaign. It said the marketing spend freed up by the top-flight ban had not significantly trickled down to the Championship, countering predictions of a wholesale shift.

A Ban That Starts at the Top

From the start of the 2026-27 season, the Premier League is implementing a voluntary ban on front-of-shirt gambling sponsorship agreed by its clubs. The measure does not stop gambling brands appearing on shirt sleeves, on training kit or as official betting partners, and it does not apply to the English Football League below it.

Sky Bet remains the title sponsor of the EFL, and gambling firms continue to strike deals across all three divisions it runs. That has fuelled expectations that operators priced out of Premier League shirt fronts would redirect budgets into the Championship instead.

The top-flight ban stems from a voluntary commitment agreed by Premier League clubs during the government's review of the Gambling Act 2005. Rather than a blanket prohibition on gambling branding, it targets the most prominent placement, the front of the match shirt, while leaving other commercial ties intact.

Operators Stay in the Second Tier

Several deals were confirmed over the summer. Midnite became principal partner and front-of-shirt sponsor of Middlesbrough, replacing Unibet, while renewing the same arrangement with Sheffield United for a second season and adding Wolverhampton Wanderers. Bet365, one of the UK's largest online casino and sports betting operators, continued its long-standing front-of-shirt partnership with Stoke City.

Birmingham City, meanwhile, elevated Coral from official betting partner to principal sponsor, putting the Entain-owned brand on the front of the men's and women's shirts. The club said it was the first front-of-shirt football sponsorship in Coral's history.

"This is the first time in Coral's history that we have become a front-of-shirt football sponsor and who better to do that with than Blues," the brand said when the Birmingham City deal was announced.

The picture is different in the Premier League, where clubs such as Bournemouth have kept gambling partners on sleeves and in other roles even after removing them from shirt fronts. The pattern suggests operators are reworking, rather than abandoning, their football strategies as the rules tighten.

EGR's finding that the Championship total has not climbed will interest regulators and campaigners who warned the top-flight ban would simply push gambling branding down the pyramid. Birmingham City set out its own arrangement when it announced Coral as its new principal partner, and the wider impact of the top-flight ban on operator spending will become clearer as the new season unfolds across the English pyramid.
