The number of online casino operators registered and ready to launch their products in Alberta has risen to 47.
On its gaming registrations list, which Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis (AGLC) has begun to update every Friday, nearly 50 iGaming brands are now mentioned alongside their operator owners as momentum builds towards Alberta launching its legal iGaming market on July 13.
888 (registered as VHL Ontario Limited) which offers online casino, poker and sports betting in Ontario has made the updated list for Alberta, while Grand Mondial Casino, Yukon Gold Casino and Zodiac Casino have also been added as brands which operator Apollo Entertainment intends to launch.
In another update, operator Albertix Gaming Limited’s mention was amended from June 5's list to clarify that it will launch its Canada-focused Tooniebet brand in the province.
Tooniebet, which offers casino and sports betting, already accepts players from within Canada, and also has an Ontario-specific platform for players in that province.
Standard practice in any regulated iGaming market, individual gaming operators will often launch multiple consumer-facing brands within the one jurisdiction.
For example, Caesars will launch three products in Alberta: Caesars Sportsbook, Horseshoe Online Casino and Caesars Palace Online.
Caesars is registered with AGLC as American Wagering Inc., a name that players will rarely, if ever, encounter.
Ontario, which became the first Canadian province to launch its own legal online gambling market back in April 2022, currently has 44 operators offering 78 different brands across casino, poker and sports betting.
It’s expected there’ll be a similar number of online casinos in Alberta once the province launches its legal iGaming market on July 13.
Although not every gaming site will immediately start accepting players and taking real money bets on that date, as some will launch later in the year, it’s likely the majority will go live once July 13 hits.
As the date gets closer and more operators are added to the registration list, a clearer picture of which exact brands and products will be open to Albertan players is emerging.
For poker players, the addition of 888 is potentially significant as it’s one of just five poker brands operating in Ontario, including GGPoker, BetMGM Poker, PartyPoker and PokerStars on FanDuel.
Alongside 888, so far only BetMGM and FanDuel are confirmed for Alberta, though PartyCasino, owned by Entain and registered through its iGaming subsidiary ElectraWorks Maple Limited, is included in the registrations list.
However, GGPoker and PartyPoker are still absent from any confirmed list for Alberta.
As BetMGM is a joint venture between MGM Resorts and Entain, in Ontario both PartyPoker and BetMGM Poker share a player pool.
While the subject of whether Canadian provinces can legally share liquidity with international jurisdictions is currently a matter for the courts, the prospect of Ontario and Alberta sharing an interprovincial player pool seems more agreed upon.
During a recent exclusive interview with Casinos.com, Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) CEO Dan Keene expressed support for Ontario and Alberta players sharing the felt online.
“We’re supportive of shared liquidity. We are working on an agreement with Ontario in terms of reaching a consensus on shared liquidity interprovincially. We're in favour of it.”
With Alberta's July 13 launch date now less than a month away, the list of confirmed operators is expected to grow further before the market goes live.
