A man released from prison just days earlier struck a Newcastle casino worker over the head with a glass vodka bottle on a Newscastle city centre street, a court has heard.

Lewis O'Neil, 25, of Ullswater Road, Cumbria, attacked the victim on Stowell Street on 14 February 2026 after the worker intervened when O'Neil appeared to be assaulting his girlfriend in public. O'Neil has since been recalled to prison after pleading guilty to assault by beating and possession of a class A drug at Newcastle Magistrates' Court.

The case highlights the vulnerability of casino and hospitality staff to street violence, with the victim telling the court he no longer feels safe in his workplace as a result of the attack.

What Happened on Stowell Street

Jade Houston, prosecuting, told the court that O'Neil and his partner were on Stowell Street when bystanders, including several casino workers from the nearby Ballys Casino, witnessed what appeared to be a physical altercation between them.

'The victim witnessed the defendant and a female fighting where he pulled her hair,' Houston said.

'The defendant noticed the victim and started shouting at him, approached him and hit him to the head with a glass bottle of vodka. It caused immediate pain.'

When O'Neil was arrested and searched, officers found a small bag of white powder later confirmed to be cocaine.
In a personal statement read to the court, the victim said:

'I don't feel safe anymore working at the casino because of what happened.'

Recalled to Prison After Guilty Plea

The court heard that O'Neil had numerous prior convictions and had most recently appeared before a court in December 2025, when he was recalled to prison for 28 days.
Judith Curry, defending, offered a different account of the initial incident with O'Neil's girlfriend, telling the court he had grabbed her to prevent her walking into oncoming traffic. She said an exchange of words followed with the casino workers nearby before O'Neil approached the group.

'He had a glass bottle in his hand and he accepts he poked the victim on the side of the head with it,' Curry said.

O'Neil was recalled to prison until the end of his licence period in May 2026. He was also handed a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £300 in compensation to the victim.

I enrolled at University where I studied Photography and film and gained a Degree and subsequently a Masters Degree. In 2014 I helped launch a new local newspaper and managed to get front and back page as well as 6 filler pages on a weekly basis. I saw that journalism was changing and was a pioneer of hyperlocal news in Wales. In 2017 I started one of the first 24/7 free independent news sites for Wales. Having taken that to a successful business model I was keen for a new challenge. Joining the company is exciting for me especially as it is a new role in Europe. I am keen to establish myself and help others to do the same.
