The UK Nightlife Index: London Finishes Dead Last

Nottingham has topped Casinos.com’s new UK Nightlife Index that scores 20 of Britain's biggest cities on how cheap the beer is, how many pubs are within reach and how many casinos are on offer. London, long assumed to be the country's nightlife capital, finishes last of the 20 cities studied.

Why London Finishes Bottom

London's nightlife scene is the biggest in the country by every raw measure, but raw measures flatter big cities. Divide London's pub and casino counts by its population and the picture flips: 36.9 pubs and just 0.33 casinos per 100,000 residents, both towards the bottom of the 20 cities studied, on top of the most expensive average pint in the index at £6.75.

The capital's sheer size dilutes its nightlife infrastructure on a per-resident basis more than any other city measured.

A Photo Finish for Second Place

Sheffield and Liverpool produced the tightest margin anywhere in the index, finishing on 63.74 and 63.71 respectively. Liverpool's case leans on pub density, with 67.75 per 100,000, third highest in the study in conjunction with one of the more affordable pints on the list at £4.77. Sheffield counters with even higher pub density (58.42 per 100,000) and stronger casino access (1.19 per 100,000), backed by a £4.50 pint. The two cities are, to three decimal places, tied for the runner-up spot.

Cheap Pints Keep the North Competitive

Bradford (5th, 61.4) and Sunderland (7th, 54.3) climbed well into the top half of the table almost entirely on affordability.

Neither ranks well on casino access, Bradford sits at 0.53 casinos per 100,000 and Sunderland at 0.34, both near the bottom of the study, but Bradford's £3.25 pint is the cheapest recorded anywhere in the index, and Sunderland's £3.50 is the second cheapest, and that was enough to carry both cities into the top third.

Brighton & Hove Edges Out Edinburgh on Pub Culture

Brighton & Hove posted the highest pub density of any UK city studied, at 71.5 per 100,000 residents, helping it to 4th place (62.5) despite a £6.25 average pint.

Edinburgh came a close second on pub density, at 71.28 per 100,000, but a joint-second-most-expensive pint (£6.00, level with Bristol) held it back to 8th place (54.0), a reminder that a busy pub scene doesn't guarantee a high score if the round costs more.

*The index scores each city out of 100 across three equally weighted measures: pint affordability, pub density and casino density, the last two both calculated per 100,000 residents rather than as raw totals.

Methodology

Casinos.com set out to find the best UK cities for a night out in 2026.

To do so, a list of 20 of the UK's most notable cities where data was readily available was compiled. Each city was then ranked on three index points: average pint price, number of pubs, and number of casinos.

Because raw counts favour larger cities, every count-based statistic was weighed against each city's population to create a population-adjusted index.

Up-to-date population data was taken from World Population Review.
The number of land-based casinos was determined using data from the UK Gambling Commission.
The number of pubs was gathered from a 2024 report from the ONS.
The average price of a pint was collected using Finder.

The Nightlife Score was then created by weighing each of the three index points equally for every city, to see which city came out on top.
