A 37-year-old man from Surrey has been charged after two break-ins at a Farnborough bingo hall netted more than £8,500.
Hampshire Constabulary said officers were called to reports of burglaries at Bingo Godz on Queensmead on August 6 and again on September 2. In both incidents, a man allegedly used a pickaxe to smash a glass door and remove a cash machine containing thousands of pounds.
Following an investigation, police arrested James McNeill, of Avondale, Ash Vale. He has been charged with two counts of burglary other than dwelling with intent to steal. McNeill is due to appear before Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court on November 5.
The break-ins have raised concerns about the vulnerability of leisure venues such as bingo halls, which often hold significant amounts of cash overnight. Incidents like these can disrupt business operations and unsettle staff and customers.
For police, the case underscores the importance of proactive security measures, such as CCTV surveillance, reinforced entry points, and rapid response systems, to deter repeat offenders targeting community entertainment sites.
The case comes amid growing calls for improved security at land-based entertainment venues across the UK. Operators are being urged to assess weak points and invest in preventative measures. The Farnborough thefts serve as a reminder that even well-established businesses remain at risk when criminals act with determination.

Most of my career was spent in teaching including at one of the UK’s top private schools. I left London in 2000 and set up home in Wales raising four beautiful children. I enrolled at University where I studied Photography and film and gained a Degree and subsequently a Masters Degree. In 2014 I helped launch a new local newspaper and managed to get front and back page as well as 6 filler pages on a weekly basis. I saw that journalism was changing and was a pioneer of hyperlocal news in Wales. In 2017 I started one of the first 24/7 free independent news sites for Wales. Having taken that to a successful business model I was keen for a new challenge. Joining the company is exciting for me especially as it is a new role in Europe. I am keen to establish myself and help others to do the same.
