Sweden’s casino landscape has changed forever. On April 25, 2025, Casino Cosmopol Stockholm closed its doors for the final time, marking the end of land-based casino gaming in the country. The closure comes ahead of the new Swedish gambling law, which will take effect on January 1, 2026, banning all land-based casino operations nationwide.

Casino Cosmopol, a state-owned operator with venues once located in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö, and Sundsvall, has long been a cornerstone of Sweden’s regulated gambling environment. Its Stockholm venue was the last to remain open until this spring, ending more than two decades of operations.

A Career of Memories

For employees, the closure is more than a legal milestone, it’s deeply personal.
One such voice is Erik Söber, who worked at Casino Cosmopol for nearly 23 years in roles spanning both Slot Machines and Table Games operations. Reflecting on the closure, Söber noted:

“After 37 years in the casino industry, this marks the end of a long and significant chapter. Casino Cosmopol has been a workplace characterized by both professionalism and strong camaraderie. I am deeply grateful for all the colleagues, managers, and guests I’ve had the privilege of working with over the years.”

Nico Behling the Gaming Manager at Casino Admiral Ruggell commented: "A thoughtful and moving post, Erik. Your words deeply resonate with me, as we just announced the closure of Casino Admiral Ruggell in Liechtenstein yesterday."

Like Casino Cosmopol, it has been a place of commitment, growth, and many memorable encounters. These transitions are never easy, but they remind us of the people, partnerships, and shared experiences that truly define our industry.

What This Means for Players

The closure leaves Sweden without any physical casinos, making online casino sites the only legal option for most players. For casual players who valued the social aspect of brick-and-mortar gaming, meeting at the tables, live poker, or the buzz of the roulette wheel, the transition will be significant.

Industry observers suggest the move could accelerate Sweden’s already strong shift toward online casinos and digital betting platforms, which are subject to regulation under the Swedish Gambling Authority. However, it also raises concerns that players who prefer the in-person casino experience may seek unlicensed or offshore venues, potentially increasing regulatory and consumer protection challenges.

Auction of Gaming Equipment

As part of its wind-down, Casino Cosmopol has announced a closed auction of its gaming equipment. Available items include:
    •    Slot machines
    •    Table games equipment (tables, roulette wheels, displays)
    •    Operational side equipment, such as chippers and shufflers

All equipment is used but was in working condition at the time of closure in April 2024.

Participation in the auction is strictly limited to licensed casino operators in their jurisdictions or verified brokers specialising in gaming equipment, ensuring responsible redistribution. Interested parties are asked to contact [email protected] and provide documentation confirming their eligibility.

A New Chapter for Sweden’s Gambling Market

The Swedish Government argues that banning land-based casinos is part of a broader effort to streamline regulation, improve consumer protections, and combat problem gambling. Critics, however, worry that removing state-operated casinos will push high-spending players abroad, to neighbouring countries like Denmark and Finland, or online to less-regulated platforms.

For the thousands of employees who passed through Casino Cosmopol’s doors over the years, and for the many patrons who made memories inside them, the closure marks the end of an era. As Söber summed up:

“Leaving this environment is naturally emotional, but it also brings anticipation for the opportunities ahead.”

With the casino lights now dimmed, the future of Sweden’s gambling scene will be written online.
