Russell George, MS, is a serving Conservative member of the Senedd in Wales who is among 15 people charged by the Gambling Commission with betting offences.
Mr George has since been removed from his two paid roles as chairman of the Health Committee and the committee that scrutinises First Minister Eluned Morgan.
Craig Williams, a former Conservative MP, was also on the list of 15 people, which also included a former police officer. The charges were in relation to last summer’s general election, when it was found that a number of people had bet on the date of the election with alleged inside knowledge.
George was also suspended from the Welsh Conservatives group by their leader, Darren Millar, forcing George to move to become an Independent MS.
Former Montgomeryshire MP Craig Williams and Welsh Conservative director Thomas James were all charged by the Gambling Commission on Monday.
They and 12 others will appear at Westminster Magistrates Court in June. If found guilty, George could face a fine or a jail term of up to two years.
It has been confirmed that the Presiding Officer at the Senedd, Elin Jones, wrote to political party managers on Monday informing them that, following his suspension from the Welsh Conservatives group, George is no longer a member of both committees.
The Gambling Commission confirmed on Monday that the investigation focused on individuals suspected of using confidential information to gain an unfair advantage in the betting market—a criminal offence.
Director of the Welsh Conservatives Thomas James has also been suspended from his paid job.

Most of my career was spent in teaching including at one of the UK’s top private schools. I left London in 2000 and set up home in Wales raising four beautiful children. I enrolled at University where I studied Photography and film and gained a Degree and subsequently a Masters Degree. In 2014 I helped launch a new local newspaper and managed to get front and back page as well as 6 filler pages on a weekly basis. I saw that journalism was changing and was a pioneer of hyperlocal news in Wales. In 2017 I started one of the first 24/7 free independent news sites for Wales. Having taken that to a successful business model I was keen for a new challenge. Joining the company is exciting for me especially as it is a new role in Europe. I am keen to establish myself and help others to do the same.
