GGPoker Cleared to Enter Alberta's iGaming Market

GGPoker has been issued an AGLC registration to operate Alberta, though the platform remains offline in the province for now.

GGPoker has cleared its first regulatory hurdle toward launching in Alberta.

The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission registered GGPoker as an iGaming operator on Aug. 12, the AGLC's public registry shows.

The registration ends a month-long absence for the operator, which sat out Alberta's July 13 iGaming launch entirely.

That absence left the province without a dedicated regulated poker option on opening day, a gap poker media flagged at the time.

Registration Is Only Step One

AGLC registration alone doesn't put GGPoker in front of Alberta players.

Operators must also sign a commercial agreement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC), the Crown corporation that runs the province's regulated market day to day, before taking a single real-money bet.

Every operator live in Alberta today followed that same two-step path: AGLC registration first, an AiGC agreement second.

GGPoker hasn't said when, or whether, it will complete that second step.

A Heavyweight Name for a Thin Market

GGPoker's potential entry carries more weight than a typical new registrant.

Its parent company, NSUS Group, bought the World Series of Poker brand from Caesars Entertainment for US$500 million in 2024.

GGPoker already operates as a licensed peer-to-peer poker provider in the Ontario iGaming market, giving it a working template for Alberta if it chooses to launch there.

A live Alberta product would make it the province's first dedicated online poker platform since the market opened.

Liquidity Remains the Real Constraint

Even with a green light from AGLC, any Alberta launch would start out ring-fenced to players physically located in the province, the same restriction Ontario's poker sites operate under.

That could change depending on a pending Supreme Court of Canada case over shared liquidity for peer-to-peer games such as poker and daily fantasy sports.

A ruling that allows provinces, or international markets, to pool players would make a standalone Alberta poker launch considerably more attractive for an operator working with a smaller population base.

What Comes Next

No launch date has been announced, and GGPoker has not issued a public statement on its Alberta online gambling plans.

AGLC's public registration list remains the most reliable way to track the operator's status in the province, and Casinos.com will update this story once GGPoker confirms a live date or finalizes its agreement with AiGC.
