Media coverage of Alberta's new online gambling market uses the words "registered", "approved" and "live" as if they mean the same thing. They do not.  Prefer to shop around? Browse the best online casinos in Alberta for more picks.

An operator can be registered with the regulator and still be unable to take a single bet from an Alberta player. This page explains what each stage means, and what it means for you.

The short version: registration is a regulatory step, approval is the regulator clearing that step, and "live" is the point where you can actually deposit and play. For the wider legal picture, see whether online gambling is legal in Alberta.

How an operator reaches the Alberta market

Alberta uses a two-step model, overseen by two separate bodies. Getting a site running legally in the province means completing both steps.

The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) handles the regulatory side: due diligence, compliance and enforcement. Operators must first register with the AGLC.

Once that registration is complete, the operator enters a commercial agreement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC), which manages the commercial relationship, anti-money-laundering checks and reporting.

Both steps have to be finished, and the market has to be open, before an operator can accept deposits or wagers. To understand the regulator's role in more detail, see how the AGLC regulates online gambling.

Registered vs. approved vs. live: what each stage means

Registered

An operator is registered when its legal entity appears in the AGLC's iGaming registration process. At this point the operator has engaged with the AGLC and paid the required fees. Registered operators are allowed to advertise and sign up prospective Alberta customers, subject to the advertising rules. They cannot accept deposits or bets yet.

Approved

Approval refers to the AGLC clearing an operator's registration once due diligence and compliance are complete. In practice, coverage often uses "registered" and "approved" to describe the same regulatory milestone. Either way, regulatory clearance alone does not let an operator take real-money play. The commercial agreement with the AiGC still has to be in place, and the market has to be open.

Live

An operator is live when it can lawfully accept Alberta players, deposits and bets. That requires three things together: regulatory registration completed with the AGLC, a commercial agreement signed with the AiGC, and the market officially open on July 13, 2026. A brand you can actually create an Alberta account with and fund is live. A brand that only lets you pre-register is not.

What each stage means for a player

StageCan it advertise / take sign-ups?Can you deposit and play? Are AGLC/AiGC protections in effect?
RegisteredYes, within the advertising rulesNo, not before launchRegulatory oversight applies; full player protections apply once live
ApprovedYesNot until the AiGC agreement is in place and the market is openRegulatory clearance complete; full player protections apply once live
LiveYesYes, from July 13, 2026Yes, full AGLC and AiGC protections apply

Why the distinction matters

An operator being registered does not mean it is live and accepting Alberta players on July 13. Registration and approval are regulatory checkpoints. Going live also depends on the operator finishing its commercial agreement with the AiGC and switching on an Alberta-facing account flow.

For a player, the practical test is simple. Can you create an Alberta account, verify your location in the province, and deposit funds? If yes, the operator is live. If the site only offers pre-registration or a "coming soon" page, it is not yet live, even if it appears on the AGLC list. Registry visibility is a first checkpoint, not proof that a site is ready to take your money.

How many operators are registered in Alberta?

The number changes as the launch approaches, and there is no cap on how many operators can join. As of the AGLC's late-June 2026 registration list, approximately 46 operators were registered, down from 47 the week before. Because several companies run more than one brand, that translates to roughly 50 consumer-facing brands.

Not every registered operator will be live on day one. Some are still completing their commercial agreements, and some may enter after launch. Because the list is updated regularly and can change in either direction, the registry is a snapshot rather than a fixed roster.

How to confirm an operator's current status

The safest approach is to check an operator's status directly rather than relying on a brand's own claims or a third-party list, including our own pages. For a step-by-step walkthrough, see our guide on how to check an operator's current status. Status can change, so it is worth checking close to when you plan to play.
