DraftKings, one of the biggest casino and sports betting brands in North America, has confirmed it intends to launch in Alberta once its iGaming market opens.
The gambling giant has already opened pre-registration to players within the province, who will be able to start wagering with real money on the platform as soon as the market launches on July 13.
Already operating in Ontario, Canada's only current legal iGaming province, its upcoming Alberta launch would mark the second province in Canada, and the seventh jurisdiction in North America, where DraftKings operates its online casino product.
Its sports betting app is currently available in 33 jurisdictions in North America, with Alberta set to become the 34th.
Despite already offering pre-registration to players, DraftKings still needs to officially obtain its Alberta gaming licence and receive regulatory approval.
"We're excited about the opportunity to expand DraftKings' footprint in Canada and bring our online sportsbook and casino experiences to customers in Alberta," Greg Karamitis, executive vice president and general manager of sports at DraftKings, said in an April 16 press release.
"With the anticipated launch aligning with the World Cup, hosted right here in North America, it's a particularly exciting moment for sports fans in the province to engage with our platform."
One of the largest online gambling companies in the world, the Boston-based operator generated $4.8 billion in gross gaming revenue in 2024, a 30% increase year-over-year, and has raised its 2025 revenue guidance to $6.45 billion.
In the 2025 EGR Power US Rankings, it was named the second most dominant player in the US gambling industry, behind competitor FanDuel.
For sports betting only, it is estimated the two rivals control roughly 78% of the US online sports betting market by gross gaming revenue, a duopoly that has remained largely unchallenged for years.
Unsurprisingly, FanDuel also intends to launch its online casino in Alberta as well as its sports betting app.
When Alberta's legal iGaming market opens, the two betting behemoths will not be short of competition.
In an interview with the Edmonton Journal on April 16, Service Alberta Minister Dale Nally revealed that 32 operators have already applied to join the market, with 20 of those having already paid a $150,000 deposit.
As well as it being the official market launch date, July 13 is also the deadline for operators to apply for an Alberta online gaming licence.
As of yet, it is not entirely clear which exact operators have paid the initial deposit or expressed verbal interest, as no definitive list has been released so far by Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC).
However, like DraftKings, Caesars, BetRivers, PointsBet and theScore Bet are all already open for pre-registration in the province.
While 32 operators have expressed interest in launching in Alberta, the total number of active brands could be much higher, as larger operators tend to launch multiple brands in one region. Caesars, for example, has opened pre-registration for Caesars Palace Online Casino, Caesars Sportsbook and Casino and Horseshoe Online Casino.
For comparison, iGaming Ontario currently has 46 registered operators with 80 different gaming websites.
