Football a Welcome Sight for West Virginia Sportsbooks in September

West Virginia is a football-mad state, and September’s sports betting numbers only helped to prove that again.

The home of the West Virginia Mountaineers, Marshall Thundering Herd and a ton of NFL fans greeted the return of the NFL and college football with increases in sports betting revenue and handle compared to the previous month.

This was despite the fact the September counting period was only four weeks and August was five weeks. West Virginia reports its numbers weekly rather than monthly, and at times that leads to some counting periods having 35 days and some just 28 days.

As for West Virginia online casinos, they reported a drop in handle and revenue, attributable to the difference in the numbers of weeks counted in each month.

West Virginia Sports Betting, September vs. August

August$33.959M$28.073M$4.030M

Note: West Virginia reports numbers weekly rather than by calendar month. September represents Sept. 4- Oct. 1; August represents July 31-Sept. 3.

Mobile Sports Betting Up Sharply, As Is Retail

The total sports betting handle (or amount wagered) in September was $46,899,825 in the Mountain State. That was a 38.1% increase from the West Virginia August report of nearly $34 million.

About three-quarters of the sports wagering action was placed online, with mobile betting accounting for $37.2 million last month. That was up 32.5% from August ($28.1 million).

The sports betting revenue was up even more sharply, rising 73% from just over $4 million in August to nearly $7 million in September. The state share of taxes rose by the same percentage, from $342,536 to $592,459 in a month-over-month period.

Last month’s numbers were down from September 2021 in a year-over-year comparison, but again that’s because that same counting period last year had five weeks, not four.

In September 2021, West Virginia sportsbooks took nearly $60.1 million in handle ($45.8 million of it online) and had $7.1 million in revenue.

West Virginia iGaming in September

The state reported lower numbers compared to August for its mobile gaming apps, though the weekly averages for handle and revenue were actually higher than in August.

The online casinos in the state, much like the other five states with regulated, legal iGaming, offer popular options such as online blackjack, roulette and poker, among others.

September’s iGaming handle was $282,169,332, down 13.9% from August ($327,615,368). However, again, with the five-week measurement in August against four weeks in September, these figures should not worry operators of West Virginia iGaming sites. In September, the weekly average for handle was about $70.5 million, compared to about $65.5 million per week in August.

The West Virginia online casino revenue figure was $10,264,190 last month, down 5% from about $10.8 million in August. The leading revenue producer in September was Greenbrier at $5.28 million, followed by Charles Town with just over $4 million and Mountaineer at $944,997.

The weekly revenue average was about $2.57 million in September and $2.16 million in August.

The other states with legal iGaming are Michigan, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Delaware. Check with us at Casinos.com for more information about the best online casino options.
