Inside River Cree Resort's $200M Casino Expansion

The Enoch Cree Nation resort west of Edmonton is chasing a "10-minute city" vision and preparing to launch its own online casino in Alberta's regulated market.

The River Cree Resort and Casino has hit a major milestone in its $200 million expansion, and the Enoch Cree Nation has far bigger ambitions than a new hotel tower.

The resort west of Edmonton wants to become a self-contained "10-minute city," and it is also preparing to launch its own online casino in Alberta as the province opens its regulated iGaming market later this month.

A $200 Million Resort Taking Shape

River Cree, which first opened in 2006, recently marked the end of the exterior phase of its expansion by topping out the hotel tower at 20 storeys. Construction is now moving inside, and the Enoch Cree Nation says the project remains on track to open by July 2027.

The build adds roughly 240 hotel rooms and around 40,000 square feet of event space, along with a new swimming pool and extra dining, effectively doubling the size of the property.

The Enoch Cree Nation has been the sole owner of River Cree since buying out Paragon Gaming in 2014 and later taking full control of hotel management from Marriott, and it says the $200 million project is being paid for entirely with casino-generated revenue.

That makes the expansion a notable example of a First Nation reinvesting gaming income directly back into its own community and economy.

The '10-Minute City' Vision

Leaders see the expanded resort as more than a casino and hotel. "It's going to be basically a 10-minute city that has all the amenities of any resort," Enoch Cree Nation Tribal Council member Kyle Peacock said at the recent milestone ceremony, pointing to future additions such as a spa.

"This is a destination for people around the world, not just the United States. We lead the way in economic development in Canada for First Nations. We don't stop," he added. The longer-term goal is a destination where visitors can stay, eat, relax and play without leaving the site.

River Cree Is Launching Its Own Online Casino

The second big story is digital. River Cree iGaming Limited Partnership, operating as River Cree iGaming, appears on the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission register of iGaming operators, listed in Enoch, Alberta with Indigenous Gaming Partners Inc. as its general partner.

In other words, the resort is set to run its own branded online casino once Alberta's open market goes live, putting a First Nations operator directly alongside the big international brands.

That is a significant step. As Alberta's regulated online market takes shape, River Cree moving online shows how established land-based venues are positioning themselves to compete for players who increasingly prefer to play from their phones.

For Albertans, it adds another regulated, locally rooted option to the growing list of online casinos in Alberta.

What It Means for Alberta Players and Visitors

For visitors, a bigger River Cree means more rooms, more event space and more reasons to make the resort a full weekend destination rather than a day trip.

For players, the launch of River Cree iGaming means a familiar local name will soon be part of Alberta's regulated online scene.
