Alberta and Ontario are the only two Canadian provinces with a regulated private online gambling market. Ontario opened first, in April 2022. Alberta follows on July 13, 2026. The two provinces use a similar two-body structure, but they differ on launch scale, advertising rules, and responsible gambling support. If you want to weigh up more options, our roundup of the best Canadian online casinos is a good place to start.
This page sets out how the Alberta and Ontario models compare, so players, researchers, and analysts can see the practical differences side by side. All figures are in Canadian dollars (CAD).

Alberta is preparing to launch its regulated market on July 13, 2026.
The structure is similar to Ontario, but in Alberta a completed AGLC registration does not by itself authorise an operator to take bets. That authority sits with AiGC through the operating agreement.
Ontario launched in April 2022 with a smaller roster of operators and grew steadily from there. By its 2023 to 2024 reporting year, iGaming Ontario reported 49 operators running more than 80 gaming sites.
Alberta is preparing to launch with a larger initial field. Approximately 46 private operators were registered with the AGLC as of the June 26, 2026 registry count. This is a notable difference: Alberta is opening with more operators on day one than Ontario had at its own launch.
Advertising rules: Alberta is stricter at launch
Both provinces restrict gambling advertising, but Alberta is setting tighter rules at launch.
Ontario tightened its rules in 2024. From February 28, 2024, the AGCO banned the use of active or retired athletes in iGaming advertising, except where they are used only to promote responsible gambling.
Ontario also restricts celebrities, social media influencers, entertainers, and cartoon figures that would likely appeal to minors.
Alberta's framework, set out in the iGaming Alberta Act and its supporting schedules, goes further on how bonuses and inducements can be advertised. Alberta rules require that inducement, bonus, and credit advertising disclose material conditions and limitations at first presentation.
An offer cannot be called "free" unless it is genuinely free, and it cannot be called "risk-free" if a player must risk their own money to use it or withdraw any winnings.
Players must also be able to opt in to receive inducement advertising and to withdraw that consent at any time.
Like Ontario, Alberta prohibits advertising that appeals to minors and limits the use of athletes to responsible gambling messaging.
The practical takeaway is that Alberta is launching with prescriptive rules on how bonuses are described, on top of the minor-protection rules both provinces share.
Responsible gambling frameworks
Each province points players to its own support services.
In Alberta, responsible gambling support is delivered through the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) and the 211 Alberta helpline. Operators entering the Alberta market are also expected to hold responsible gambling accreditation as a condition of operating.
In Ontario, players are directed to ConnexOntario, a free and confidential provincial helpline. The two services are separate. Alberta players should use Alberta resources, not Ontario ones.
Age, taxes, and revenue model
The minimum gambling age is 18 in both provinces. Players must be 18 or older to gamble in Alberta, and the same age of majority applies in Ontario.
Tax treatment is the same across Canada. Recreational players do not pay tax on gambling winnings, because winnings are not treated as income for casual players. This is set federally and applies in both provinces.
Both provinces use a conduct-and-manage revenue model. The provincial body (AiGC in Alberta, iGO in Ontario) holds the agreements with operators, and operators share a portion of their gaming revenue with the province. This keeps the regulated market under provincial oversight in both cases.
Alberta is launching a regulated market that looks structurally similar to Ontario but opens with more operators and tighter advertising rules. For players, the headline points are simple: the market goes live on July 13, 2026, you must be 18 or older to play, and your support resources are AiGC and 211 Alberta.
