Our news reporter, Alan Evans, brings you the latest news from the casino industry on September 12, 2025.
"Welcome to this week’s Casinos.com news roundup, bringing you the biggest stories from the world of gambling, betting, and casinos.
We begin in Sweden, where Casino Cosmopol has closed its doors for the final time. After more than two decades in operation, the closure marks the end of land-based casinos in Sweden, with gambling now moving fully online. Long-time manager Erik Sober shared his memories of the glitz, the glamour, and the challenges of casino life in Stockholm.
"Back in Britain, Betting and Gaming Council CEO Grainne Hurst emphasised bingo’s enduring place in UK culture. Speaking on the game’s community spirit and economic contribution, she highlighted how bingo continues to support jobs, tax revenues, and local communities, while remaining a cherished pastime for millions.
"The BGC also voiced disappointment at racing’s decision to reschedule fixtures without consulting betting operators. The Council warned that such moves risk disrupting fans, undermining revenues, and harming the long-standing relationship between betting and racing, an industry supported by over £350 million a year from operators.
"From Charles Fey’s Liberty Bell to today’s online video slots, we took a deep dive into the history of slot machines. With the UK’s new £2 stake limit coming into effect this year, the story shows how slots have evolved from pub favourites to billion-pound earners, while adapting to regulation and technology.
"In politics, the BGC marked a milestone by engaging with the Reform UK Conference. With Nigel Farage now a leading political figure, the Council stressed the importance of dialogue across the political spectrum to ensure balanced regulation and protection for both consumers and jobs.
"It’s also been a bumper year for bingo players. Two £50,000 jackpot winners at Buzz Bingo clubs were among a string of major National Bingo Game payouts, including a record-breaking £105,000 Colossus Bingo win in London. Proof, once again, that bingo remains a life-changing game for lucky players.
"And finally, UK Gambling Commission CEO Andrew Rhodes visited Gibraltar, meeting with operators including Entain, Rank Interactive, and BoyleSports. Discussions focused on rising customer acquisition costs, the impact of AI, fraud prevention, and the upcoming Gambling Act 2025. The trip highlighted Gibraltar’s unique role as a key outpost for UK-facing gambling operators.

Most of my career was spent in teaching including at one of the UK’s top private schools. I left London in 2000 and set up home in Wales raising four beautiful children. I enrolled at University where I studied Photography and film and gained a Degree and subsequently a Masters Degree. In 2014 I helped launch a new local newspaper and managed to get front and back page as well as 6 filler pages on a weekly basis. I saw that journalism was changing and was a pioneer of hyperlocal news in Wales. In 2017 I started one of the first 24/7 free independent news sites for Wales. Having taken that to a successful business model I was keen for a new challenge. Joining the company is exciting for me especially as it is a new role in Europe. I am keen to establish myself and help others to do the same.
