Northern Lights Casino Supports Event to Fight Gender-Based Violence

Northern Lights Casino in Tisdale, Saskatchewan, sponsored the 2025 “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event, held Thursday, June 5. The event was organized in partnership with North East Outreach & Support Services (NEOSS).

The event aimed to raise awareness about domestic and gender-based violence and while serving as a vital fundraiser to support NEOSS’s essential programs in the Melfort area.

Joan Bear, executive director of NEOSS, emphasized the importance of community support in their ongoing mission. 

“Thanks to sponsors like Northern Lights Casino, we can continue providing vital programs and resources that make a real difference in people’s lives,” Bear said.

Casino destinations across Canada are increasingly becoming pillars of community engagement through charitable sponsorship like this.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes

The event featured a spirited competition for the coveted “Heel’s Angels” trophy, awarded to the team that raises the most funds. Participants also competed for the title of “King of the Heel,” a fun challenge to crown the individual who best embodies support and advocacy for ending violence. 

The community is encouraged to register for the upcoming Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event, where they can vie for the prestigious title and contribute to an important cause.

Community Initiative Enhances Safety and Wellness

NEOSS offers a range of programs, including a 24-hour crisis line, second-stage housing, and prevention support services. Their ongoing efforts focus on creating a safer, more inclusive community by addressing violence-related issues and supporting survivors. Their mission is to enhance the safety and wellness of individuals and families in crisis in Saskatchewan, while nurturing personal growth.

In addition to the walk, NEOSS and Melfort Youth Evolution announced a new youth program for 2024, “Melfort Youth Evolution #HANGOUTS,” aimed at providing safe spaces for local youth. 

Thanks to grants from the Community Initiatives Fund, the program continues the legacy of previous successful initiatives like “Keep It 100,” “MYE Space,” and “The MYE Hive,” which have been well-received and impactful.

Celebrating 40 Years of Community Work

NEOSS also celebrated its 40th anniversary this year, reaffirming its commitment to dignity, respect, and zero tolerance for abuse. The organization is actively seeking passionate community members to join its board of directors, with expertise needed in finance, public relations, social work, policy, or legal matters.

His Honour the Honourable Russ Mirasty, lieutenant governor of Saskatchewan, has accepted NEOSS’s request to be honorary patron during his term of office.
