This is America's only private casino, surrounded by stunning Appalachian Mountains and integrated into The Greenbrier's storied grounds. With elegant decor, a completely smoke-free environment, and a refined atmosphere, it's a world apart from typical casino properties.

However, this isn't for everyone. The country club feel, formal dress code, and deliberately upscale pricing create an atmosphere that some will love and others might find too stuffy. If you prefer casual, laid-back gaming, this probably isn't your spot. But if you appreciate exclusivity, elegance, and don't mind the formality, it offers a truly unique gaming experience you won't find anywhere else.

The Casino Club is tucked inside The Greenbrier resort at 101 Main Street West in White Sulphur Springs, WV, surrounded by the property's vast, beautifully manicured grounds and mountain scenery. Everything is walkable within the resort, so you never need to leave if you don't want to. Parking is handled through the resort's valet or self-parking options, and the whole setup feels polished and integrated.

Here's the catch: this is a private casino with restricted access. The Casino Club is open only to registered overnight guests at The Greenbrier, as well as attendees of events or conventions when more than 400 rooms are occupied. You can also get unlimited access through membership in The Greenbrier Golf & Tennis Club (from $2,184 annually), The Greenbrier Legacy Club (cottages from $1,144,000), or The Greenbrier Sporting Club (homes from $1 million). 

So this isn't a place you can just casually pop into. You need to be staying at the resort or have membership access, and you probably need to have deep pockets to empty before you have even put a dime in a slot machine.

The casino floor exudes grandeur and old-world glamour with a classy, intimate atmosphere. Think elegant decor, soft lighting, comfortable seating, and a real sense of exclusivity rather than the flashy crowds and noise you'd find at most casinos. It's completely non-smoking throughout, which makes the air fresh and comfortable and it’s a huge plus if cigarette smoke bothers you.

The space feels premium and uncrowded, with a layout that encourages you to linger over drinks or games without feeling rushed. Live entertainment often adds to the energy in a refined way. It ties perfectly into the resort's luxury feel without the overwhelming chaos of bigger properties.

That said, it definitely has a country club vibe that isn't for everyone. It felt a bit too formal and posh for my personal taste. Some people will absolutely love the refined, exclusive atmosphere, but if you prefer a more relaxed, casual gaming environment, you might find it too restrictive.

One thing that really rubbed me the wrong way: the dress code after 7 PM. No denim is allowed, and men are required to wear jackets. It's too stuffy for my liking and takes away from the relaxed fun of casino gaming. If you're the type who likes to throw on jeans and a comfortable shirt to play slots or hit the tables, this place will frustrate you.

FYI, the Casino hours are: Sunday-Thursday 1 PM to 1 AM, Friday 1 PM to 4 AM, and Saturday 11 AM to 4 AM. So it's not 24/7, and the limited hours might be inconvenient depending on your schedule.

Table Games

The table games area features 31 tables with classics like blackjack, roulette, craps, mini-baccarat, and some poker options including Texas Hold'em and Three Card Poker. The dealers are professional and attentive, fitting the upscale setting perfectly. You can even request private tables or casino credit for more exclusive play if that's your thing.

The selection was about average in my opinion, which means nothing particularly special or disappointing. Minimums are typically higher to match the luxury crowd, often starting at $15+ for blackjack even on quieter times. The pits stay lively but refined with low-key conversation and cheers rather than rowdy energy.

It's a sophisticated spot for table games without the loud, chaotic atmosphere of bigger casinos. If you appreciate that refined environment, you'll enjoy it. But if you're looking for variety or lower minimums, you might be underwhelmed.

The slots selection includes around 180 in total, featuring a mix of classic reels, modern video slots, and varied themes. The selection feels curated rather than overwhelming, with good spacing between machines for privacy and comfort during play.

The chairs are plush and inviting for longer sessions, and the whole area maintains that elegant atmosphere. I personally found the slots a bit disappointing, I must admit. It's not a massive slot selection, and if variety is important to you, this might feel limited. It’s probably because the place is going for more of a James Bond casino feel, and when you think of James Bond in a casino you don’t think of slots.

The quality and atmosphere make spinning feel more elegant and refined than at typical casinos, but it's not going to satisfy serious slots enthusiasts looking for the latest games and huge variety. If you're just looking to casually play a few slots in a comfortable, upscale environment, it works fine.

Sportsbook

The FanDuel Sportsbook is a comfortable, high-end spot with plenty of big screens for wagering on sports. It's set up nicely with cozy seating and TVs throughout, creating a relaxed viewing experience that fits the resort's overall luxury feel.

I saw the sportsbook during my visit, and it was okay but nothing to get particularly excited about. There's no horse racing or racetrack as part of this casino (unlike other West Virginia racinos), so the focus stays purely on traditional sports betting and casino games.

Rewards Club

The Casino Club offers a Players Club where you earn G-Rewards points on every dollar spent in the casino. Points are redeemable for comps like free stays, dining, spa treatments, resort activities, or merchandise across The Greenbrier property.

It's straightforward to join, and members get priority access to offers and news. The program feels tailored to the luxury crowd, rewarding play with meaningful resort perks rather than just free play credits.

I didn't personally sign up for G-Rewards during my visit, but it's there if you plan to return regularly or want to maximize the value of your casino play.

The Greenbrier has around 400 rooms total, including estate homes and cottages spread across the historic resort property. This isn't a separate casino hotel tower either. You're staying in the main resort with all its history and grandeur. Again, some will love that, some might find it a bit socially oppressive. I am the latter!

Rooms

I stayed in a classic room, and it was very nice. The room was elegant and high-end with beautiful furnishings, plush bedding, premium linens, a large flat-screen TV, and thoughtful touches like robes and luxury bath products. The rooms feel spacious, historic yet updated, quiet, and impeccably clean. Many offer mountain or resort views that add to the charm.

It's true luxury accommodations—far from basic or mid-range. The service was excellent, there were no issues or maintenance problems, and you have easy access to the casino via indoor paths. Everything is designed for unwinding in style after gaming.

That said, like the casino itself, the rooms have that country club feel that wasn't quite my style. If you love that refined, traditional elegance, you'll think the accommodations are perfect. If you prefer something more modern, casual, or contemporary, it might feel a bit formal or old-fashioned for your taste.

Where to Eat

Here's where The Greenbrier really shines: the food everywhere was exceptional. This was genuinely a highlight of the experience. The casino area has several upscale dining options right on hand:

All the various eateries keep everything sophisticated and on-property, so you never need to venture far for excellent food or drinks. The quality is genuinely impressive across the board. Just be aware that everything is very expensive, deliberately so I'm sure, to match the upscale clientele.

Pool and Spa

The Greenbrier has extensive wellness facilities available to all resort guests. There are indoor and outdoor pools (heated and scenic), a full-service spa offering treatments like massages and facials, plus a top-tier fitness center with excellent equipment.

I didn't personally use the pool or spa during my visit, but both looked very nice. These are all resort-wide perks that offer relaxing ways to balance casino time with pampering. Everything is clean, luxurious, and beautifully maintained, as you'd expect from a property of this caliber.

Entertainment

Entertainment at the casino includes frequent live events, music, and performances in the Casino Club or nearby resort venues. It's more intimate and classy than big productions, with acts like live bands and cabaret-style shows. There are occasional special evening events that fit the elegant atmosphere if that is your thing but none were on when I visited so I can’t comment on them personally.

It’s certainly worth noting that this would be a brilliant resort for golfers. The golf facilities looked excellent, even to my non-golfer eye. The Greenbrier is famous for its championship golf courses, and if you're into golf, this is probably one of the main draws of the entire property.

Between the golf, the casino, fine dining, and other resort activities, there's certainly plenty to fill your time if these upscale pursuits appeal to you.

However, this is not a casual casino experience. The country club atmosphere, formal dress code (no denim after 7 PM, jackets required for men), limited access (guests and members only), restricted hours, and deliberately expensive pricing create an environment that some will find too stuffy and posh.

I personally prefer other casino resorts that are a lot more casual and relaxed. The formality took away from the fun for me, and I found the slots disappointing and the table games just average despite the elegant setting.

If you appreciate exclusivity, don't mind dressing up, enjoy refined environments, love golf, and have the budget for a premium experience, this could be an excellent special getaway. It's a one-of-a-kind property that you won't find replicated anywhere else in America. But if you're like me and prefer jeans, a t-shirt, 24-hour gaming, lower minimums, better slots variety, and a laid-back vibe, you'll probably find it too restrictive and formal for your taste.

It's a special, upscale kind of getaway that caters to a specific clientele. Just make sure that clientele is you before booking, because the exclusivity and formality are very much baked into the entire experience.
